Your coffee brewing method

I have another kilo of Fudge Blend on its way with some Christmas blend. Thats if it gets here through the Postal Strikes.
A mate of mine gave me 100g as a sample of the Fudge blend. I will be ordering some. Not a kilo as I only drink one or two coffees a day if that.
Very impressed with the quality of Rave & the Christmas blend sounds great, hope it comes in time 👍

I only have one or two a day, but if we are home I will make Mrs Saint one, or sometimes a colleague one. I buy the beans and grind small batches as I need it.

Still experimenting at the moment with also copying recipe/prep recommendations with a V60 & AeroPress. Great little pastime with lots of rewards.
I too am grinding what I need for the day
Do you use a machine or manual brew prep?

Electric grinder from John Lewis, Aeropress, Aeropress Go (for work) and a Nespresso Milk warmer and frothier. Oh and metal filters in both Aeropress.

No mine get delivered in an airtight bag and stay in it. I believe freezing has a divided opinion.
I used to buy multiple large bags of beans at the grocery store when on sale and freeze all but one which I ground for daily use. Yea we used to go through a lot of coffee back then. Seemed to work just fine.

Supposedly freezing the beans dehydrates them. I keep my coffee in an airtight jar. I must confess though that I buy ground coffee and not beans. I used to grind my own beans, but really couldn’t tell the difference from the pre-ground variety. I’ve been thinking of investing in a burr grinder, which I’m told grinds more evenly and consistently than a blade grinder, as I use two different brewing methods requiring different grinds: French press and mocha pot. Truth be told, I’m an espresso lover, but make my espresso with Nespresso Original Starbucks capsules; gives me a quick caffeine hit first thing in the morning with no fuss no muss.

Yes, defo don't use a blade grinder, you can't control the grind size. It gives you an unholy mix of boulders and fines. In a French press you need coarser grind and a blade grinder will give you a load of fines that pass through the filter. Even a burr grinder will result in *some* silt but much better overall. I have a Knock Aergrind manual burr grinder for FP and Aeropress. The cool thing is it fits inside the plunger tube of the AP for storage and travel.

Anyone freeze their beans until they are ready to grind some for the use that day?
I have done when I've overstocked. I have had mixed results. It does preserve the freshness but you have to seal the bag and tape over any valve to prevent moisture ingress. Once you take the bag out you need to let the whole thing defrost before opening it to reduce condensation. That's why I prefer to not freeze, or freeze in small bags. Opening a bag of frozen beans and putting them back in the freezer will let condensation form and then it'll gradually add unwanted moisture to them. You can seal them in smaller airtight bags. You can also grind from frozen. This actually works well. The worst time to grind is during the thawing period when the condensation is wet and before it evaporates. Some folks vacuum pack individual portions of beans and grind each from frozen but life is too short for that imo.

My preference for storage is I buy a kilo, divide it up and put some straight into the hopper and the rest in AirScape containers that force the air out. (Not actual vacuum, but no 'headspace' above the beans due to a plunger inside to expel the air). I use 1kg a month roughly, based on 3 x 18g shots per day, some Aeropress brews and some espressos for visitors. That way I use it faster than it can go stale and no need to freeze. Cool dry dark place with minimal air exchange basically.

I buy >£25 (to get the free shipping) every 4 weeks or so from Rave and freeze most of it, defrost it a week before it gets used to try and hit the ideal post-roast rest time. I've not done the taste test to validate this because I can't be bothered and because I don't think my taste buds are that discerning. However, James Hoffmann knows his stuff and is pragmatic enough to recognise when perfection trips into obsession so that's good enough for me.

If anyone is super interested in outstanding coffee try the Niche Zero grinder. For me it's better than my old Mazzer Mini-E, but it is only for obsessives.
