Your coffee brewing method

I've been happily using my Nespresso for a couple of years now but the fact that I was binning the pods was pricking my conscience a bit. I know Nespresso do a recycling by post option but where I live deliveries can be hit and miss as they often fail to find us, and it sounded like a bit of a faff.

I've just bought one of these: https://www.dualit.com/products/ecopress-aluminium-capsule-recycler it works brilliantly with my favourite Cafepod capsules, neatly turning them inside-out and dumping the coffee grounds into the collection bin at the bottom. The now inside-out pod just needs a quick rinse and it can go into the household recycling. The coffee grounds can go onto the garden.

I use a press, but also have a stove top expresso and Chemex. I think the type that allow the oil to be a part of the brew to be best

I like my Tassimo for espresso and have started on one of the recycling bags. Will have to see how I get on when it’s full with collection!

My other type is a cafetière mug with a budget grind from the Co-op.

I use a cafetierre or a percolator that my father bought in 1976, the sort that goes pop pop pop when the coffee is nearly ready.

A company called Percol makes excellent instant coffee, the Espresso roast is perfect and leaves a long delicious taste in your mouth.

i pretty much brewed my own coffee for years but 10 years ago i was introduced to Nespresso
not for everyone granted but for me i love it
Great Coffee with no mess & no hassle

We use a metal mesh reusable filter in our automatic coffee maker so I imagine they do not filter out the bean oil as paper filters might do. The reusable metal mesh filters are available in basket and cone styles. There is even one for the Aeropress maker.

I've been using a regular Aeropress for the last couple of years. Definitely good for one cup, not a crowd. I dunno what you're coming from, but you get into a rhythm once you have a technique you like. There are lots of complicated recipes for how to get the best out of one, even a championship. Mine is pretty simple:
  • Use the invert method (I follow this for Americano or this for espresso-style)
  • Put the Aeropress on a scale (if you want to measure how much water you're adding) and add coffee grounds
  • Put the filter in the holder
  • Boil the water and let some of it run through the filter. Stick the filter and holder in your mug
  • Add 40g/ml of water or so
  • Stir with the paddle to create a paste, making sure you get any grounds stuck at the edges/bottom
  • Let it bubble away for 10s if it's going to. Apparently this is CO2 being released from the grounds. No idea if that's true or not
  • Add the rest of your water
  • Give another vigorous stir
  • If there's a gap at the top push the plunger up/body down so there's only a few mm of air (I find this makes it less messy when you flip the Aeropress over)
  • Stick the filter holder on
  • Hold the mug on top
  • Wait for your brew time to complete
  • Flip and plunge, which takes me about a minute
Writing it out like that makes it seem complicated. For me, it's pretty much automatic now.

I bought an electric percolator in 1976, the coffee sits in a metal cage and it pops and bangs when the coffee is ready, I like it because it is old and still does the job, I never thought much of this planned obsolescence idea
