Much has been made in the news of a near-total solar eclipse. Went outside, cloudy over Cumbria. ”Ah well,” I thought “it’s 90% of totality, it’ll go dark or something.” No. Feck all. On the up-side I now don’t care that I’ll be dead by the time we get another one.

My last experience of an eclipse took place in 2017 from West to East in the US. It was a clear day and I had the special glasses. I recall a strange but not total darkness.

As ever, once the media get hold of something it’s generally hyped up and milked for all they can get out of it.
From personal experience here in South Wales, the shadows grew longer, light was dimmer, but definitely not dark enough to mistake it for night time.
Didn’t have eclipse glasses but Mrs Sideburns jerry rigged a small colander on our window sill for a bit of eclipse shadow play.

Some of the newer smart phones seemed to take quite good pictures of it. Quite a few people from our block of flats went out to see it and it was a really nice shared experience with a lot of laughter and jokes. I enjoyed sharing the experience with others more than the eclipse itself. A nice evening for us...

That must be the one I’m thinking of, although I forgot the exact year. Our company handed out a bunch of glasses and we all took a little break to go outside and watch. I could take it or leave it. I get more jazzed about rain falling through sunsets.

I sat in the garden, the sun didn't' shop shining throughout the eclipse, a little darker but really marginal and nothing like the BBC reporting.

Planet Earth is meant to be be going through a meteor shower at the moment, now good TV coverage of a meteor landing (especially on the loud mouthed occupant of Number 3) could have been been interesting.

Sounds like a lovely time, @Mark12. I have this picture in my mind of British flats inspired by too many BritBox episodes. Is your wooden front door high gloss red or British racing green?
