I understand your message but I am not one to use violence to bend people to my will, I just would have hoped that if he really felt the need to sit up all night fully clothed then he might have gone to one of the many waiting rooms instead of sitting there within 10 feet of my bed coughing away.

By his own admission it was just a tickle in his throat, in my day mother would have given me a honey and lemon drink and sat me down to watch the Flintstones and Popeye until it was (an early) bedtime.

What is wrong with these people?

And yet their opening line is 'Christmas is a magical time of the year'.

The only thing magical is that you should disappear in puff of smoke

People do say it is a magical time of year. There is something to be said for ignoring it all together.

A few years ago I was able to ignore it completely. I did gather with family, but I didn't decorate or go shopping. I remember Christmas Eve fondly out riding a road bike on a country road. There were no sounds coming from people at all. The thought I had was everyone finally gave up exhausted and went home. Whatever preparations were in place would have to suffice.

It takes courage, but I think it is worth experiencing Christmas this way at least one time. Any meaning found might be more than less.

I am now around family nearby and enjoy the season in yet another way. Each holiday season, I know, may be my last. The food and treats are good and the family and friend fellowship is sweet. The friends I have made down at the Methodist Church also add to the experiences. We sang carols to those who cannot get out last year. I am sure we will do it again.

And it will all go on “sale” at various times, indicating the enormous margins involved, none of which are going to the workers in the factories who make it.

The factories crank it out faster than we can buy it and bury it.

It’s all destined for the landfill in short order.

The day was fine. We’re on a short coach holiday. (The holiday is short, not the coach.) At dinner we were stuck with an absolute moron who talked total drivel the whole time.

I was hoping he would have a heart attack and I could steal his really nice Sekonda watch in the confusion.
