TOBS shaving creams

Have TOBS reformulated their shaving cream? I’ve used TOBS shaving cream for as long as I can remember. Until recently I was unadventurous with the cream I used, sticking to Rose, Lavender and Avocado. Recently, however, I decided to venture further afield and bought tubs of Lemon & Lime, Cedarwood and Jermyn Street sensitive skin. The L & L performed as I expect a TOBS cream to, but the Cedarwood and the Jermyn St didn’t. I’ve always found TOBS creams to be cushioning and slick with good residual slickness., but neither the Cedarwood nor the Jermyn St exhibited these characteristics. The Cedarwood is acceptable, but the Jermyn St just doesn’t do it particularly its lack of residual slickness and overall cushioning. Since this cream is supposed to be formulated for sensitive skin, I would have thought that it would excel in both these areas.

I thought I’d resurrect my first post as I’m disappointed with a tub of Eton College shaving cream I bought earlier this year, but didn’t open until two weeks ago. Eton College is/was one of my favourite shaving creams bar none until I opened this tub. For starters the cream was not soft as it normally is; it was more like a soft Italian shaving soap. More troubling though is that I’ve found the cream lacking in cushioning and slickness with little to no residual slickness. To add insult to injury, I find the cream doesn’t lather as well as in the past. It performs just like the Cedarwood and Jermyn St creams I wrote about above two years ago . I’ve used the cream for every shave for the last fortnight with a different brush each time with no satisfaction. What is going on? Is it me or has TOBS adulterated what used to be a great product?

I have had a few dry out before, but the’ve performed well regardless. This Eton College doesn’t perform up to what I expect from TOBS.

I’m now using a bowl of The Body Shop Maca Root and Aloe shaving cream and its performance just reinforces my disappointment with the TOBS cream. TOBS have been the mainstay of my shaving cream rotation for most of my +50 years of shaving, but regrettably I’m gong to have to move on to other brands.

An interesting post. Sometimes we put premium brands on a pedestal, without too much in the way of justication

I had a tub or two of TOBS a few years ago. I was not impressed and have not bought any since. I was also disappointed in a tub of Castle Forbes lavender that I bought a few years back when compared to the performance I get out of Ach Brito Lavander and for considerably less money too. The Body Shop's Macca Root has always been an excellent performer for me in comparison to either TOBS or CF. I tend to shy away from premium brands these days.

You know, they also removed the Aloe from the Aloe cream, the avocado oil from the avocado cream, the coconut oil from the coconut cream etc?

Awful brand, best seen for what it is now (gullible tourist fodder) and consigned to the dustbin of history.

A very sad state of affairs. Like R181/Bob I’ve always found The Body Shop cream to be excellent, even after re-formulation. I also agree with him on CF Lavender being crap and Acho Brito Lavanda, which he introduced me to and is now staple in my rotation.

Ach Brito is superb I agree. Never tried Maca Root as I can't abide the scent but it looks decent value and gets lots of praise online.

I'm new to wet shaving. I have always used a DE razor, but never did the brush and used Barbasol shaving cream. I bought a new DE razor and fell into it. I did some light research and everyone was talking up TOBS. I bought the Cedarwood as my first shaving soap. I had some okay shaves, but mostly bad shaves. Later I bought Proraso Sandalwood since it was on sale. I tried it a couple days ago and it was substantially different. It was very slick and seemed to have some solid cushion, residual cushion as well.

Today I went back to the Cedarwood and I noticed it was not slick at all. I felt it had very little cushion. In fact, I cleared up my razor burn and a shave with Proraso didn't aggravate it at all, but the Cedarwood brought it all back in full force.

With my little experience, I agree with you.

YMMV and all that, but you may find it performs better when used with a badger shaving brush.
