Statins?

Extreme sharpness is ephemeral!
Statins are a multi-billion-dollar industry. Cardiologists are over-prescribing them, offering them when a diet and lifestyle change will work.

I have recently had a blood test to check my cholesterol levels. The results are fine and my good outweighs the bad.

However, the quack contacted me and we had a discussion about statins and how, at my age, 73, it might be worth my while taking them to help(?) my heart. We agreed I would consider it and I would look into the matter and decide.

My initial reaction is not to bother as it would be a “for life” commitment and is it really necessary? However, I will look at all the angles.

Anyone here have any thoughts either way?

Thanks

steve
Used statins for 17 years after heart stroke and three cardio stents installed. Statins have negative impact for your liver. But few months ago my cardiologist changed them to new-generation medicament that does not harm liver and are made to reduce MTL (bad one) cholesterol.

Brand name - Ezoleta. As much as I understand this is just other marketing name of Ezetimibe, that is available in the US. You can check with your doctor and find more if applicable. Here are links for both of them:

Good luck!

Few years ago my blood test showed my cholesterol level at 6.7, it has been high for the last few years and the doctor told me to take Statins, I have never been a fan of medication and did not want to be on something for life, my other option was to cut down on red meat, prawns and lots of other stuff, do regular exercise and eat healthy, I took the 2nd option, I looked into Statins and other alternatives,
I ordered a tub of Plant Sterols 800mg as food supplement and took 2 a day, ate red meat, prawns and lots of cake, went back for blood test after 6 month's and the test showed cholesterol level came down to 5.4, I have nothing against Stains or other medication advised by doctors, this is just me and my choice.

I don't like taking anything prescribed from a primary care and will only consider taking meds prescribed by a physician. I have had at least 1/2 dozen incidents of over-prescribing or side effects from doctor-prescribed meds in the past. I know at just-south-of 70, I will eventually need something, but have been very fortunate to have tried to live a healthy life - most of the time.

Recently, dropped a bunch of weight, got my BP in order, dropped my A1C to below 6. I figured after years of my primary care telling me to loose weight and get my BP in order, she's be happy. But no, I got yelled at when she wanted me to continue taking the meds. I asked why and she responded with it's just best. At that point I asked for a medical reason and when she couldn't provide one asked if she was on commission from the pharmacy company? Then the yelling started.

You need to make your own decision, but for now, my decision is to be wary of anything prescribed that's also advertised on TV

I'm taking Rosuvastatin 5mg (Platorel) from October 2023.

I didn't have very high cholesterol levels, but the doctor said it's a good idea to keep it low.

Indeed, when I started taking the pill, the cholesterol levels went straight down, massive difference in the blood tests. The liver is ok, with just some fat around it, like many people have.

I also lost 11 kg (from 86 I am 75).

All in all, it's a great pill for the arteries (from what the doctor said) and personally I didn't have any side effects from it.

But the doctor also said to start buying soap sets again, it's unhealthy to stop this habit he said.
