Seduced on first use

Recently. The exact same experience although not even having tried the razor. Referring to the new Tatara razor. Smooth yet very efficient no longer floats my boat when wanting to own something different.

This happened with Fatip Grande. Had some good shaves with it, but after this I find that it bites a lot more than my R41 for no reason.

The exact opposite thing happened with my 37c Slant. I didn't like it on the first shave, but after trying another blade, I liked it a lot. Still experimenting..

Yup.

I’ve fallen out of love with about half of my remaining razors - I have ten left - for one reason or another. Yet, for a time, they were once the best thing since the last best thing. I keep most of them out of sentiment and haven’t got around to selling or trading the expendables.

For context, I’ve used the same razor since April.

It's maybe offtopic but one thing also can change our oppinion about our razors. I think about, since I read this topic.
Like in any filed in life more road we passing , more we progressing: in tehnique, in knowledge, buy better blades- or attliest should be. So we just overgrowing some razors.
I start looong ago with soluna and plastic Wilkinson. I can now get perfect shave with them to be honnest. But really, did you really want to mess with Wilki again. I no. Than I get Muehle R89, than R41, now they are ancient history. When i discover Gillette Rocket it was like spaceshuttlle for me. Now when someone say "Rocket is best " i smiling. Why? Did Rocket is bad? Not at all. But in compare with RFB, than when you try Barbasol floatinghead, than Gibbs 17, than Kirby, than Olaf Rasmussen and bar going higher and higher. I try Karve some time ago. I not have hurth to say my friend that hVe him and rises them to stars: i get totally perfect shave but in comparing to my best razors - he is simply borring. Like idiot aparat. Nothing challenging. Nothing new. Olaff is (for me) 3 lighting years more interesting razor.

I don't think you can get the best out of a razor in two or three shaves, though in saying that, my first shave with a 1912 was a real eye opener and I'll never be without one.
But the intriguing thing about this game is, you can agree with some people about most things and then there are things were you are poles apart. I know a few people whose opinions I respect who love the Mongoose. I had five or six shaves with one, thanks to @Barry1963 and could not get on with it.
The Cobra is another marmite, I love it and if I could only have one modern SE that would be the one.
Anyway, enough rambling, back to the point, and shock horror, I don't think I have fallen out of love with a razor.
If I like a razor after a few shaves, I have continued to like it.

I used the word modern P, because I'll never be without a 1912, my intro to the wonderful world of SEs.

I had a cobra on loan too. It is a great piece of artisanal metalwork it shaved well too, trouble is when it comes to SE razors I judge everything by my Mongoose as it is the one I own. To get something that is truly that much better a razor will have to go some. They all are great and well worth owning but the bar is so high already anyone of them would be good enough in anyone’s collection.

For some reason, my first shave is often my best shave with a new razor. Perhaps I spend extra efforts on the initial use or a placebo effect. Future shaves are not consistent with the first shave. Repeatability is included in my attributes of a good razor. I am happy with my current razors and low interest in great razors but possibly not any shaving improvements.

I know i'm reviving an old thread.
One year ago. With the chinese clone of the Feather SS and a Kai Captain Mild MG blade in it. Then a few weeks later with a Feather Pro Super blade in it. And then three months later with a Henckels Zwilling 70½ straight razor.

Although I tend to use a smallish rotation of razors, I enjoy revisiting those that have been temporarily left by the wayside for one reason or another. It’s sort of like getting a new razor without actually buying one. Sort of

I’m an outlier. I’ve never been disappointed with vintage blade holders or honed/replacement blade straight razors. All work if you know what your doing.

My rocnel sailor 2020. Saw the pics. Really stunning. Found one of the last ones on sale but it was just before payday. I remember checking the website many times per day. Then payday came and it was mine.

Thinking at the time. Omg what if it shaves horribly? Luckily it's smooth and just a wonderful razor. Soon i will have 5 sailors.

I think there's probably 5% difference in the hardware we use once we're in the right ballpark.

There's probably 80% difference in the emotional response we have to things in our life......

If there's any mathematical formula around all this I certainly don't know what it is.

Sunk cost fallacy might come closest as a description?

As someone that makes an expensive razor due to low quantities etc I struggle with this personally as well, but from the other side. I benchmark my razor against others and often feel the imposter syndrome for my own product.
