Razor trial

Just want to hear other opinions on razor trials. As there are many variables I tend to use razor for 15 shaves before making judgement. This way I change few blades with different characteristics, soaps and brushes.

I find I can generally get a good feel for a razor after seven days continued use, my blades are few and tend to work with the razors I favor.
Soaps and brushes.....well I always use a good soap especially when evaluating a razor and all my brushes build good lathers from good soaps.

Hello again Paul

I didn't read this until after I had written to you on the subject of The Shaving Solution (TSS). I note your specific mention of lather, and I appreciate that traditionally this is an important element of the whole shooting match.

However I must mention that TSS does not produce any sort of lather at all. It is simply a cream in appearance and feel.

Please let me know if you think that it would not after all be of interest to you.

If however you are still interested, may I refer to your "seven days continued use" and say that I would hope that you would get an identical shave after 7 days, whether you started with a fresh blade on day one or a blade that you had hammered to death. I would also hope that if you are starting with a used blade you will get an improved shave with TSS., compared with whatever lathering product you had used the day before. The ultimate test I suppose is to start with a new blade and see for how long you can use it before you have to change it.

Yes Tony still interested in testing TSS, I never use a blade long enough for it to give me a bad shave, blades are cheap enough for me to change before they become dull therefore ensuring me perfect shaves every time. :) P.

Well I got plenty of soaps most of them are excelent performers and they provide me with great shaves. Just as they are different bases some of them create different lather, some are rich and creamy, some are low profile and it is important aspect for me to test it with different soaps.

Typically I try a razor for seven days starting with a fresh med prep and a reliable soap. There have been a couple of exceptions; the Feather AS-D2 I liked immediately, the Blackbird hated me from day one, but by and large it takes me a couple of goes to get the feel for a new razor and then a few days of consistent results to form an opinion.

I still feel a good soap should work with any razor but YMMV ! :) P.

I'm all for A-B testing. You start with your reference and then see if a new piece of equipment is same, better or worse. I build my own hifi and I do this all the time. Same with golf clubs and all the rest of it. For me I'm only interested in keeping the best, usually with 2 or 3 backups which are different but very close in performance. This would certainly be the case with razors and also blades. Different with brushes and soaps because subjective feel is just as important as performance and variety is nice. With razors there's no way I want a less efficient shave, more stubble or more passes and cleanups. I'm not a collector.

How do you A-B? One side of the face against the other is often done. A bit tedious but probably the best way of doing it, then check 8 hours later or something like that. Making notes and having some kind of scale are additional options. That's if you're after "the" razor. If not, it matters less.

For me it's about finding the intersection of "efficient enough" and comfort. Using the Tech as an example I can get a fantastic shave if I pay attention to the angle, stubble gone and no irritation or discomfort. A more aggressive razor may cut over a wider rangle of angles, but my stubble will be no more gone than it was with the Tech, sub-optimal angles cause discomfort and I end up paying just as much attention for no tangible benefit.

A-B testing has led me to my pinnacle razors, a good thing if you want to find "the one", but limiting when it comes to new shiny as the bar has been set very high and I have no interest in buying something that's going to work less well.

Well I did A-B test few times when I was testing similar razors for example ball end tech and flat bottom tech. I perform A-B test for two days minimum with switching sides as they are not same. As I'm daily shaver I'm looking for comfort and efficiency so my reference are Karve B plate and Gillette rocket HD. Consistent use helps me see if the razor is comfortable enough to be used every day.
