I have been considering the same knife and for fun developing patina on it. This can be done with various things like tomato sauce. Some manufacturers actual suggest it.Just arrived - Opinel No. 6. Nice size for a pocket knife with a 7cm blade and takes a wickedly sharp edge. Sod's law being what it is I managed to catch the side of the blade down one of the ceramic rods and lightly scratched it. >.< Ah well, it's a cheap working knife. I'm looking forward to the carbon blade darkening with age
My father-in-law has used these on the farm for decades, as did his father. One of the barns has a smooth spot on the stone near to the door where they used to touch them up when needed.

Removing the lock ring does it detract from the look ? I know you can buy non locking too. Is the lock ring just an added ring. I would like a non locking to keep it legal with regards to locking blade laws.I’ve considered doing a forced patina myself, leaving it stuck into a potato for a few hours looks like the easiest way, but I’ve seen a few videos with mustard or tomato ketchup being used. It is effectively blueing, so would help to protect the blade from corrosion.
The locking ring can be removed if required for EDC.
