We would gladly send you more forest fire smoke but with your tariffs to import it you probably could not afford it.

Had a conversation this AM with a very nice gentleman who drives vintage European cars and a Mercedes camper. He needed a part which was in Germany. He praised tariffs for getting the US to a level playing field with Europe. Who did he think was paying the tariffs, Germany? Germany makes the part that is not available here. He’s paying the tariff!!

Yes, ultimately the end user pays the import tariff and not the country where the part came from. Add to that anyone importing a shipment of various different goods will have the shipment opened on arrival in the receiving country so that each individual item can be tariffed at it's own rate. It is a losers game.

During the previous Amazon Prime Day I placed an order for a product at near half price. So far, the item, after 3 weeks has not shipped. I’ve leaned that vendors are under contract to fulfill orders. I’m going to outlast them…🤣🤣

People have mocked the NYC school system for decades, but we learned about tariffs in high school. It’s not that difficult a concept to understand. It’s sad that so many never learned history or elementary economic theory.

When I began to restore and hone antique straight razors I learned about the 1890's McKinely Tariffs. At that time there were US manufacturers of cutlery like in Geneve, NY and Claus Fremont in Ohio. There were importers like Wester Brothers who imported from Germany to avoid tariffs, if I recall. In this time a consumer could easily avoid the tariffs by purchasing American made products.

I learned about "economies of scale" where some countries can do something more efficiently. Their efficiency may be due to paying poorly. BMW, Volkswagen, and Mercedes have a US presence.

The people who pay are like the guy needing a part not made in the country he lives. The sad part is he thinks he is better off.
