Had a conversation this AM with a very nice gentleman who drives vintage European cars and a Mercedes camper. He needed a part which was in Germany. He praised tariffs for getting the US to a level playing field with Europe. Who did he think was paying the tariffs, Germany? Germany makes the part that is not available here. He’s paying the tariff!!We would gladly send you more forest fire smoke but with your tariffs to import it you probably could not afford it.

Yes, ultimately the end user pays the import tariff and not the country where the part came from. Add to that anyone importing a shipment of various different goods will have the shipment opened on arrival in the receiving country so that each individual item can be tariffed at it's own rate. It is a losers game.Had a conversation this AM with a very nice gentleman who drives vintage European cars and a Mercedes camper. He needed a part which was in Germany. People have mocked the NYC school system for decades, but we learned about tariffs in high school. It’s not that difficult a concept to understand. It’s sad that so many never learned history or elementary economic theory.Yes, ultimately the end user pays the import tariff and not the country where the part came from. When I began to restore and hone antique straight razors I learned about the 1890's McKinely Tariffs. At that time there were US manufacturers of cutlery like in Geneve, NY and Claus Fremont in Ohio. There were importers like Wester Brothers who imported from Germany to avoid tariffs, if I recall. In this time a consumer could easily avoid the tariffs by purchasing American made products.People have mocked the NYC school system for decades, but we learned about tariffs in high school. There are Indian Reserves north of us that are "dry reserves" but they have a heck of a time keeping the booze and drugs out.It is illegal on some Indian reservations in Alaska.
It wasn't even the pilot who possessed the beer, it was a passenger on his plane.
