Help me choose a high end knot please

TGN show both the plug size and the size just above that - what they call the 'tuff' although tuft sounds better. They do High Mountain in 19 and 20 mm nominal plug width so I'd say that the 19mm would be good for what you want providing you can set it deep enough as the overall height is about 65mm.

There's my problem. The replacement knot is going into brass housing on a lead crystal handle. It only sits just below the glue banding on the end of the knot. see pic at top of thread.

The knot which came out was 72mm and flopped about like a good un! I need to find one 50-60 mm max

Given the lack of proper depth, you'll likely run into trouble with most ready-mades given their height. I'm hoping I'm wrong of course, but believe most or all I've seen have been at least 65mm total.

Alternatively, go for custom, hand-tied from Declaration Brushworks. You're looking at USD 99, though, and I'm not sure if he takes orders right now.

Thanks Halvor. I fear you may be right and 65mm is too high. I'll keep looking, I may get lucky with something 55mm or less but not holding my breath.

How much have you got to go on, by the way? Don't think you said. Depth, I mean.

I couldn't recommended a Chinese knot as I have a has a poor success with shedding hairs. If they didn't shed they'd be great value. How about a synthetic? Cashmere/tuxedo/horse from apshave on etsy?

If I want a low loft I'm seriously restricted unless I go with shavemac. However, if I wanted another shavemac I would have chosen the group buy.

James, if you have a couple of cms below the rim, a 65 mm knot should be OK - even a 19 or 20 mm diameter would need about 45 mm loft otherwise you will not hold enough lather.

From the looks of it you have less than a cm available in the socket there? You're probably better off with finest, since it likely has more backbone than the silvertip and will yield the best result with the loft you will end up with. The silvertip has softer tips. It's two band vs three band.

I do. It's not high quality.

As for the recommendation, I can't give you one without knowing exactly how much depth you have to play with. Since I'm assuming very little, I would recommend only the D01 two-band from Shavemac. It's unlike any other knot out there. You can't even compare it to the Shavemac knot you have now.

You will need that incredible backbone to keep it from becoming a floppy mess, but will still get soft tips. Setting it that high in the handle will probably result in a brush that has slightly more backbone than a regular finest/best knot from (insert generic high quality manufacturers here).

The D01, when set at Berndt's preferred setting, feels like a fuzzy eraser for at least a month of abusive use. It's a right love-child to break in. I had mine reset a few mm higher in a different handle, and it made a world of difference, but still has more backbone than any other brush I've used, and I've used many brushes.

For the size specs given and face feel required your going to get the best knot from Shavemac IMO. As mentioned by @PLANofMAN above, the D01 option would be the best. I see your point on trying a different knot manufacturer, however I think this is the best knot option given your requirements.

Thank you to everyone for the advice. I'm leaning towards Shavemac D01 2 band but now I need to decide height.

On a knot size of 20mm I only have the choice of 40 - 46.

Given it's a tall handle (70mm) and I bowl lather which would you recommend please?

Here's the original 65mm knot... IMO it looks a ridiculous floppy doppy!
