Help me choose a high end knot please

I picked up this used Royal Brierley brush for not much money. The 20mm knot was shedding badly so I've removed it.

I'm looking for something fairly high end as a replacement. I always bowl lather but I do like a soft tip with a little backbone. I'd rather spend a little extra and have something nice. I already have a Shavemac unique 2 band and a TGN so I'm looking for something different.

The replacement knot is going into brass housing on a lead crystal handle so I am somewhat restricted. The socket circumference measures 21 mm so I'm thinking 20mm knot. I can't make any further adjustments so in order to maintain some backbone I'm looking for a low loft

Any recommendations and supplies of knots only?

James, I asked the same question a while ago and didn't get much further than the responses here. Although there are quite a few knot suppliers, they are mainly at the lower end. Have you considered a high mountain white from TGN? I have one in a 24mm and it's a good performer - however at 20mm you will need to watch the loft if you still want good backbone. The issue may be that the depth at which you can set it is restricted and may make it too high.

The beauty of Shavemac is that you can specify the loft you need - so, if you measure from bottom to rim and then tell Berndt your preferred attributes he can then advise the overall size that will give you the correct loft when set.

I would go with a shavemac. D01 silvertip or even regular silvertip are a nice change from the normal 2 banders.

Thanks Rob. I'll check that out. I'd rather not have another Shavemac at least for now as I already own one. I'll see if I can find a choice of lofts in TGN HMW.

The final loft is a very important attribute to consider.

Shavemac might be the best for specific situations like this.

I'd be willing to bet that for knot suppliers within the EU you'd be sol aside from the Shavemac option. If you import from outside the EU I'd be prepared to bent over by the friendly folks at customs.

If the diameter of the hole on the brush is 20mm then you may want to look at a 18mm-19mm replacement knot because typically the knot size is taken at the base of the knot. Typically the knot bulges out just above the glued part. You need some clearance for the not to easily slip in. If you get a size for size fit you may wind up having to ream the hole out a bit.

I think most places give the loft dimension of a replacement knot from the base of the glue plug to the tip of the knot. You may have to regulate the depth of the hole in the brush to set what we would normally term the loft, knot exposed above the handle.

All things being equal I think you are on the right track with the 20mm knot size considering the 21mm socket size. Yes, I have used Chinese knots with few problems. They will work and are inexpensive. Any import duties payable could increase the price though and may be worth taking into account.

TGN show both the plug size and the size just above that - what they call the 'tuff' although tuft sounds better. They do High Mountain in 19 and 20 mm nominal plug width so I'd say that the 19mm would be good for what you want providing you can set it deep enough as the overall height is about 65mm.
