Help me choose a high end knot please

I would choose 42-43 mm.

Thanks.. I'm limited to 20mm because it's going into a metal brass housing with very little depth. I don't want go lower than 20mm.

I would email Bernd and explain your situation. That is you have a 21mm dia opening, hole depth of XXmm and wish to have a 20mm knot with the loft, hair exposed above the handle, you want. Also tell him the knot characteristics you like and see if he can accommodate your wishes with a knot grade of his suggestion.

As for the recommendation, I can't give you one without knowing exactly how much depth you have to play with. Since I'm assuming very little, I would recommend only the D01 two-band from Shavemac. It's unlike any other knot out there. You can't even compare it to the Shavemac knot you have now.

You will need that incredible backbone to keep it from becoming a floppy mess, but will still get soft tips. Setting it that high in the handle will probably result in a brush that has slightly more backbone than a regular finest/best knot from (insert generic high quality manufacturers here).

The D01, when set at Berndt's preferred setting, feels like a fuzzy eraser for at least a month of abusive use. It's a right love-child to break in. I had mine reset a few mm higher in a different handle, and it made a world of difference, but still has more backbone than any other brush I've used, and I've used many brushes.

I'm given to understand that my particular knot was a fluke. Regardless, the knots are no higher in quality than the average Chinese knot. Most of those are of decent quality, but not "high end" quality.

Yup, I believe your best bet is to refer it to Bernd. Shavemac has an excellent selection of knots of the highest quality. Given the constraints you are working with I think you have to consider another shavemac knot, which probably doesn't have to be same as the one you have.

Thank you. I'll let you know how it goes. Apparently, it takes at least 30 uses to fully break in.
