No argument as that won't happen. Once the USA tells all who will pay for the tariffed items in a package then they will send packages again. Then it is up to the US consumer to decide if they want to pay the tariffs on the items in the package or not. Those tariffs are paid at point of entry which is the USA as it is the USA's tariff. Enjoy your tariffs.

In 1891 the McKinley Tariffs were introduced. I recall when I was into collecting vintage straight razors how some German manufacturers would establish an American company/presence that would distribute its products. If I remember correctly, Wester was formed for this purpose.

I know of no reputable economist who thinks tariffs are a way toward fair trade. What is sad is how so many Americans think that these tariffs punish someone besides themselves. I am beginning to notice an upward trend in prices. For some, they don't see the limb until it smacks them in the face.

100% agree with the last paragraph of the above message. And because none of the reputable economists agree with the current administration stance on tarriffs - POTUS goes out of his way to call them out and ask's their employers to terminate their contracts, as per what he did with the head economist from GS, around 10 days or so ago.

Edit: GS = Goldman Sachs.

Establishing an American company to distribute foreign products won't work today. This American company would have to produce some or all of the product in the US to qualify for a tariff exemption. Due to the higher manufacturing/assembly costs in the US it would be pointless and even more expensive to do so.

Yes, after all the BS settles, tariffs are a tax on the consumers of the country which imposed the tariff.

Well you might be partially right, but the flip side of coin is some employees are not your stereotype. They Pay Well, Bonus, Provide Lunch, and Benefits packages to get good employees, and retain them.

Then you have the Amazon's and Wal-Mart types employees were you cannot be fires, Slave must be sold.
With global free trade established there is no incentive to pay employees well and have benefits packages. The unions which helped established those conditions have been decimated over the last half century leaving more people vulnerable poor pay and no benefits. That counts for the majority of jobs out there today.

Union have lost power, few are what they were. Many thing Union fought for like job safety & working condition are now laws.

I do not get paying CEO $20,000,000.00/year, but worker making minimum wage is shameful.

Businesses with high employee turnover are many. Poor wades & crappy working conditions is many time the problem.

Yes, and imposing tariffs will not change anything in that regard. Do you really believe that without strong unions good paying jobs will ever come back? It is time for people to wake up and smell the roses. Things changed while people slept and they ain't going back any time soon to the way they were.

Think Skilled Trades offer good money, but you got to start at bottom, and work your way up to bring Journeyman.

Many young people today don’t want a job where you get dirty hands.

Military offers free training in many fields, that offer great civilian side jobs.

Public Safety is a great career, today Police Officers, and FireFighter jobs are every place.

I would not argue that many younger people don't want jobs where they have to get their hands dirty. You can build quite a few houses with a few key skilled/qualified trades people, but the rest are just plain unskilled lobourers.

Creating more military jobs, police and firefighting jobs only drains more money from the public purse as that is where they are paid for from. You can take tariff money from the budget to pay for those types of jobs but that will do little to reduce the national debt. When you do that the national debt just keeps getting bigger.

20 something male friend here can weld, repair autos, fly a drone skillfully, is tech savvy, loves to talk shop, camp, interesting to converse with, and ran up to say hi when he saw me fueling the Tahoe. Don’t give up on them. My granddaughter twenty something is in nursing, got back from a trip to Montana, got a life saving certification, and has a server job while full time student.

I find young people as able and eager to work now as ever. The educatiinal system is ti blame for a lot of the mess we have. Somehow it has convinced us that ALL kids need to go to college. I went to college and consider it money wasted as I work in a skilled trade and make better money at that than what I ever could have with my degree. We should encourage young people to look into technical and trade schools and not chase After junk degrees, that won't pay off in the long run.

Manufacturing probably never will come back in the US like it was, due in part to unions who bargained it out of business. Mainly now they make it so that lazy people can't be fired. My wife is a federal employee and it is disgusting to hear the shenanigans people pull that they protect them for. The other nail in the coffin is the EPA. Not that we shouldn't protect our environment and ourselves by proxy but other countries like China and India won't play by the same rules. Between exploitation of labor and environmental abuses that we won't hold them accountable for there's no way we can compete. THAT, is the dirty little secret and the elephant in the room no one wants to talk about. If we were really serious about either environmental protection OR workers' rights we as a society would refuse to buy from countries that offend. But we all want our cheap goods and it is easy to turn a blind eye to offenses that are blocked by the horizon. Out of sight out of mind.

I can’t say that any of that is true. Being a former union business agent u think your thinking is the actual problem. Not the workforce or the erosion of the trained unionized workforce that has led us to the position today where we have a barely there middle class, the poor and the super wealthy. And you can just look at the unionization numbers then and now to see that MORE union workers and benefits is a stronger economy. We didn’t bargain away our jobs. The bosses moved them for PROFIT. It people weren’t easily fooled we wouldn’t be where we are. But sure blame union workers as lazy.
