Brits paying a third extra in order to get EU goods

An article in today's Times, reports that DPD is charging a 30% premium to bring goods from the EU to the UK.

It looks like I won't be getting that Pils after all.

There was a story in one of the papers about a woman who was charged an extra £40 customs duty for a £200 coat.

I contacted a company in Germany about sending a pen to me, 'we are not sending goods to the UK at the moment until we have some clarity on how we charge duty and procedures, we will then make a decision on whether it is worthwhile.'

20% customs duty seems fair.
Plus VAT.
Plus whatever Royal Mail/DPD/etc feel like charging.

I'd expect £90 on top of a £200 order.

Shouldn't come as a surprise... it's what most people wanted.
As Mrs May used to say: Brexit means Brexit.

The report I saw was £80 on a £200 order, so you're in the right ballpark.

There was a report on BBC News earlier that high end UK brands are considering burning returns from the EU rather than going through the cost and paperwork of trying to get items back as returns are also subject to fees. I guess that says something about the markup that some companies have as well as the extra cost of trade.

Almost all European shaving goods are available in the UK, I really don't see the problem.
But they must be imported to the UK to the vendors, and many wholesale agents aren't shipping to the UK due to the taxation/tariff question.

Non-EU buying from UK have been impacted in pretty much the exact same way. I'm in Ireland, a lot of my beloved UK sites are still charging UK VAT at checkout, we then have to pay IRE VAT on import along with administration charges.

Democracy rules, it is what it is.

Have you emailed them and asked for VAT to be removed? If I were buying something expensive like a Shavemac I'd want the German VAT removed.

Anyone tried that?
