Keeping it topped up using a standard plug and paying for the use of a fast charger when needed could work. There's just the small matter of the fact that a new Ioniq 5 is about £45K. I'm aware that there are probably smaller cars that are cheaper, but I'm currently driving a 3 series Touring and don't want to go much smaller.

There don't seem to be as many options for second-hand EVs except for the nearly-new ones that are still north of £30K.

Plenty of options, battery health (SOH) is not the worry most would have you believe.
There are however many niggles that various models can have. Bit of research will weed them out. TBH the Ioniq 5 was too much to consider because of that.

Why? I very rarely touch my HVAC controls- sometimes to change the temperature and maybe in winter mornings to de-ice the screen (if I’ve forgotten to turn it on remotely) but then I’m stationary. 99% of the time I leave it on Auto.

Because the auto setting is good at reacting to the ambient temperature in the car, but not so much the fact that I'm wearing a black T-shirt and the sun through the glass is making me too hot. The times that I do want to adjust the temperature when I'm driving is much easier in my car that has a physical knob than it is in my wife's car that has a touch panel. Replacing said knob with a touch panel may benefit the manufacturer, but it makes what should be a simple thing less convenient and impossible to do without looking at the panel to see where to touch it and again to make sure that it has registered the touch and acted accordingly. The use of a touch panel does not benefit the driver in any way.

The fact that the car I have now may be the last one I have that has physical controls and a proper handbrake makes me sad.
