I was thinking the same Eric - but it would be a convoluted way of pricing. I can only recall seeing items sold in whole guineas - as a guinea was worth 1 pound 1 shilling, half a guinea was 10 shillings and six pence, therefore the total price would have been 7 pounds, 17 shillings and six pence which is also your 7.88 in decimal. It's far more likely that this would have been written as £7/17/6 so I would discount the price assumption.

I suspected the 40's or 50's.

The seller had some other brushes that I have seen verified around that time on another website.

I debated whether I should open the knot hole to accommodate the knot. It was meant to be though. There was a couple odd chips around the rim of the hole and it wound up being just the right amount once I smoothed them out even. The original hole was 29 and I went to 31.
