Feather blades

I am starting to wonder why these blades are so highly rated. I just don't seem to get good shaves with them. I have read that somebodies feel the blade is not so good during the first shave but after that gets better. Today I tried Feather with German 37 slant and the last pass ATG left my neck really irritated. And yes I really didn't use any pressure. Yesterday I tried those with Muhle R89 and it was a much better shave but not like WOW!

But I sold those blades today. I just don't get what is the trick using Feathers. Considering the higher price they cost I would expect them to be special in a good way but to me they aren't.

Just thinking aloud here :ninja:

Highly rated? In most 'list your top DE blades' type of threads, I find that few mention Feather? Sharpest ones, yes, but not the smoothest.
Yup, your shave technique and lather has to be very good because they are on the unforgiving side.

IMO they're just not that good. At best I've had decent shaves with them but they blunt very quickly and to be honest they just don't feel that sharp to me to begin with, I've had quite a few that have tugged from the first stroke.

Maybe I have read wrong lists then. I was in believe Feathers are the Rolls Royce blades of de shaving.

You have to stick them in a very mild razor to get the best results. Blue tip, adjustable, tech, feather as-d2, etc.

They are the only blade my fiancee will use in her Lady Gillette.

I used to recommend them to newbies as a teaching tool. If you start off with feathers, you will not use too much pressure. They will teach you good shaving habits if they are the first blade you use.

That being said, there are several other brands of blades that are almost as sharp for half the price. Astra SP, Ladas, Gillette Silver Blues, and Polsilver Iridiums come to mind.

There's no such thing, opinion probably varies more on blades than anything else. A while back I participated in a blind blade test, Astra SP were highly rated by just about everyone, me included. The blades I scored the lowest were Wilkinson Sword and Feather.

Do you also throw your kids out in deep water to teach them to swim?

No. But they (when I get around to having kids) also won't have any bad swimming habits that they need to unlearn, either. :)

Cartridge razors have not done wet shavers any favors as a teaching tool.

I don't know about using them in mild razors but I do use Feather blades in my Muhle R41 2012 version, various slants, Fat Boy @ 9 and WR1-OC with increased blade gap. I do get a very close shave but the edge definitely has some harshness to it. Gillette Silver Blues are good too being almost as sharp but with a tad bit smoother edge.

Like others have said there is so much variation between users as to which blades are best for them. You simply have to try a bunch of different ones to see what works best for you personally. That seems to apply to virtually all shaving gear with no universally "best" anything.

Just goes to show how subjective blade preference is.

I once used them in a Hoffritz slant and paid a very severe price in terms of nicks and soreness afterwards. Some combinations just don't work - I've used Feathers in razors such as the Gillette Ambassador and it was fine but only for a couple of shaves.
