For such a lightweight tool, this thing was surprisingly aggressive, much like the Caveem safety razor. This is my first Wilkinson Sword. Do I dare get the all-metal one?

Well, when I say 'aggressive' or 'mild', bear in mind that's relative—that is, it's aggressive on MY face. It may not be on yours. As well, for its weight class, it's aggressive compared to similarly lightweight razors. I did note that the blade gap is slightly wider than on some of my metal razors, and more blade exposure tends to mean more of the edge coming in contact with one's face.

The geometry of the razor head is designed to be highly forgiving with a Low Blade Exposure. The razor holds the blade at a reduced angle with a closed-comb guard, which minimises the risk of nicks, cuts, and razor burn and is regarded as being excellent for beginners due to its non-aggressive, mild nature, wet-shaving experts frequently recommend it as an affordable starter razor.
As I said, it may simply be down to the way that you are using the razor.

Possibly, but I've been using safeties for nine years now and I tend to figure out the correct angle for a given razor pretty quickly. Could simply be that the blade itself is sharper than many I've used in the past. Next time I shave I'll load the blade into a different razor to see if there's a difference.

In my experience, its a mild and safe, smooth razor. A really good one at that. I have had mine for a decade and still use it sometimes.
The shape of the head does make it feel different on the face so finding the angle is a little different to usual.
One thing to check is that the top cap is seated and properly screwed all the way down - i say this because its definitely one of those razors where you can deliberately make it more aggressive by unscrewing the top cap just a touch.
