Why so many Turkish barbers?

In northeast and north central Queens, NY, seemingly all of the traditional men’s barbershops (i.e., not a unisex “salon”) are owned, operated and staffed by/with men from Ukraine and Belarus.

Tangentially, my wife’s paternal grandfather was born in Belarus in 1903. He too was originally trained as a barber. He used the blade for over eighty years! I inherited two of his scissors [garbage, btw]; one of G’s cousins pinched his straight razor and strop:headshake:
Years later as an adult in the U.S. he gave up professional barbering. He found work in and later owned a kosher delicatessen.
