What made your day a good one?

Managed a great deal of prep on the wooden surrounds above the windows of our conservatory, removing flaking paint and keying the surfaces. Also applied one coat of the waterproof paint to one of them. More progress tomorrow, weather allowing.

Spent some time in the pm sorting rolling stock for the layout that is going out on Saturday, plus running several locos on the test track that hadn’t seen the light of day for months.

Pretty satisfying all round.

I can imagine that each item of rolling stock has to be period correct not only to each other but also appropriate to the locomotive, no good having a Deltic pulling cattle wagons.

Edit:

Deltics were the fast express diesels of the 1960s

They made an absolute roar of a sound when pulling away because they were three cylinder, opposed pistons, two stroke diesels

Similar to the infamous "Boxer "engine. It is one reason I bought the Subys. Love that sound.

Quite right about making everything match. It’s what I do with my modelling as much as possible. For instance, Rectory Farm Sidings is going out this weekend in what is known in enthusiast circles as the BR Blue period, ie late 1960s to mid 1980s, approximately. So the stock will mirror what ran on BR during that time.

I’ll leave it there for now, before I get boring! :D

I understand what you mean but the gas boxer engines throw the pistons out in opposite directions with a spark plug to create the bang. The Deltic engine uses the pistons coming together to create the compression and the bang in one stroke, creating a two stroke diesel - not a valve or camshaft in sight.

I think that Fairbanks Morse and Doxford used something similar but on a huge scale, not many more.

As you say, Subaru used a Boxer and some BMW motorcycles.

The family had VW's, I have a mid '80's RT-80 BMW "air head" and then '73, '10, '15 Subarus. Thanks for explaining. :okay:
