I am reading, In the late 1890's there were 100,k horses producing 2.5 million pounds of manure per day in New York city. There were too much to be used as fertilizer. Street sweepers would charge people wanting to cross the street to clear the way.

Imagine the infrastructure to bring horse feed into major cities in addition to the specialist horse slaughterers dealing with the horse at the end of the horse's life, much of the meat went for cat and dog food.

I wouldn't have lasted two minutes, I was in trouble with a Tampa mounted police officer for petting his horse, I would have been beside myself with the widespread horse cruelty in 1890s major cities.

Good point about the feed. Combine feed and manure and you are causing the proliferation of rats and flies. Then women wearing long dress dragging them through it all, not to mention shoes covered in excrement transporting it into the homes and shops.

True, the one I use is an Illinois made of horse hide.
