What is it that makes you want buy one soap over another?

Performance. Nothing else matters for me

Performance is a good word, but........................Water to Soap / Croap / Cream Ration make or breaks a Lather.............I want a Lather like a Frozen Ice Cream from Dairy Queen, Think like Whipped Cream, or the Stuff you install Tile with, Wet enough to Soften my Beard, and slick as a
Greased Pig, that Razor will Glide Over.

It really is about lather quality for me. This is why I'm more focused on the soaps that seem to have R&D into continual base development. A&E, Adopted Acres, The Cajun Blade, HoM, Noble Otter (and I'm sure there are others I'd love to get educated on!)... these are the ones that seem to be focused on the base development and experimentation with different tallows and chemistry, and this is what makes all the difference in improving the quality of my shave.

Scent is important, but it's an "important" second place.

If I have to choose only between two soaps:

The first one smells divine but can't hold water. Feels frothy & runny.

The second one smells like $hit but it's rich, dense and can hold water.

I would choose the second with eyes closed. Performance is the key for me.

 

[Occams Razor]

I like the underdogs - high-performing soaps and creams that dont break the bank, and that smell good. Palmolive, Gillette Pure, Nivea Sensitive, TBS Maca Root and Aloe, Proraso Red and Wood and Spice are all awesome.
I'd like to try TFS almond, but can't source it in NZ.
Packaging is only important as far as function goes - I dont like a half-used product that spills or can no longer be properly dispensed or closed. Artwork is not even on my radar.
