Welcome to the darkside (going back to cartridges)

I too used carts for my entire adult life until I was in my 50’s. My motivation was not cost but to do this daily ritual like it was done several generations before me. And as a financial guy, realizing that I could buy a ton of different double edge razors knowing I could turn around and sell them for what I paid (plus or minus), as well as brushes and bowls, that meant my only true cost would be blades, soaps, creams and aftershaves, which are needed anyway. Now that I’m semi-retired I don’t need to shave every day. And I don’t. But when I do, I really appreciate the ritual, even though it takes more time than a cart. But I can never replicate the bbs shave I get from a double edge with a cart. Never. I will never go back to carts unless a physical ailment forces me to. Hoping that never happens.

I'm going to go ahead and try one, just to eliminate it. Just like you said, I might not get as close of a shave, so that will probably be enough to satisfy me to keep with the DE/SE/AC shaving.

I also do enjoy the ritual like you said. For me it's a very good thing. I can slow down a bit and actually reflect/think about stuff while doing it. Sort of relax and go into a bit of a zen state.

If you're someone that's always in a rush, though, maybe a cart would be suitable in that case (then again, you can always use a really mild DE), but you can still use a DE a couple of times a week when not in a rush as I'm sure most people would have a day or two to take their time.

It was a complex risk-benefit calculation... sort of damned if you do, damned if you don't!
Yeah, darn, sounds full-on to me. How did you like your time there (not sure if you are still in the army/military?) overall?

I only did 2 years, half of which was training, and I just caught the tail end of the Border War. Met and suffered with some great people, and some real idiots, and got to play with some pretty cool gear. I think it was a positive experience, but one I'm glad I cut short. Because after 1994, the SA military went downhill really quickly.

As did my lot after 1980.

A quick update.

I used the Gillette Labs for the second time a couple of nights back, this time with 3 days growth. I found it pretty rough and tuggy, the finished results were the same as previous, e.g. baby smooth.

I think I’ll try using shaving oil and soap with a DE blade tonight. I’ve bought a few different DE blades this morning. The Gillette Minora, Gillette London Bridge, Rapira Swedish Superstainless and Treet Super Stainless. The last two I think I might have tried in the past.
Still using the Gillette Labs, @Blackmass ? Wondering how your shaving journey is going...

Yup, you got it.
Got relatives on my Mother's side who are/were Rhodies. They chose to relocate to Australia, as such I've only seen them twice in 36 years... Quite old now so guess I may not see them again. Such warm people with some crazy stories to tell, who else would have a braai on Christmas day?! :giggle:

Many of my friends relocated to Australia and a few to New Zealand. Many more went to South Africa and the UK, but only a few to the USA and fewer to Canada. In the town I live in now there is a South African (from Joburg) butcher, so when we have a braai (even on Christmas Day) we load up on boerewors and other SA delicacies. I’ve also found a butcher from Zambia (formerly Northern Rhodesia) near the town my wife is from In Hampshire who produces excellent boerewors, biltong, droewors, etc, so we are able to enjoy SA delicacies when we visit the family there.
