Two new synthetics

Two new knots have just arrived and they have been fixed into their waiting handles. The Blue Keyhole had a Badger originally. I tried to sell it but no interest so I threw it in the bin. Little did I know the Wife rescued it. When I found it I removed the knot and have now fitted a 26mm AP Synbad.
The second is a Wildwest Brush works handle with a new AP 26mm Cashmere installed. The glue is drying. They will be ready tomorrow

Wayne, have you compared the APShaveCo Cashmere bulb and fan knots? Doesn't seem to be much info online, I'm guessing the fan just feels bigger on the face and splays easier (too easy perhaps.)

Hi, sadly no. I don't think the difference will be noticeable so I just buy a knot and bung it in. The Wildwest needed 6p under it, the blue one already had coins glued in so it needed none. As a Yorkshireman I was happy about that.

Good question which I can answer for the Silksmoke as I have both variants:

They both feel similar on the face in terms of contact area and have a similar degree of splay. The reason behind this is that the fan is set at a lower loft for preassembled brushes. Set both at a similar loft and your theory will be a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Curious to hear your thoughts on the Cashmere. It’s plain floppy to me. Or it would have to be set at such low loft that I’d need a way bigger one than the one I have (24?).

Hi Halvor.
Floppy is O.K with me. I have never been a fan of backbone in my brushes, even when I used Badgers. I never wanted a scrubbing brush. Synthetics are never going to satisfy someone who enjoys low lofted, stiff shaving brushes because they believe they exfoliate. They don't. All they are is lather hogs. I'll happily take floppy. Mrs Wayne isn't as keen for some reason 😀

Oh, I’m comparing apples to apples here. Cashmere is limpy, Tuxedo (for one) has more substance. That’s what I was getting at, not how it compares to a scrubby two band badger.

Backbone notwithstanding, I’m thinking I may have lost my lather mojo lately. Whatever I do with a natural brush, the lather just won’t build properly; synthetic - get there straight away. Go figure. Now just to find the optimal synthetic, I guess.

One day there will be one, not just yet though. It's still a compromise.
