Thoughts on shaving

Hmm, I read on another thread that a razor is merely a handle to carry the blade. What tosh! It's the way in which it presents the blade to the skin and the angle, the head ergonomics, its weight, grip, etc. Soap may be worth paying more for, ditto creams, if you are after a luxurious scent and skin feel that particularly favours your physog but Arko and Palmolive work just as well for me.
As to the merry ground: there is a certain truth in spending cash simply hoping to chance upon that supposedly and hopefully 'perfect'.Holy Grail razor, the latest most luxurious brush and so on. But if I'd never ventured further, I'd have stuck with my EJ DE89L which is still a good razor but my Merkur 34c is a step up as is the stainless Mamba and the Hone 15 better still. I wish I'd spent less, wish I'd some of that money for other things but hey ho, you only live once so experience what you fancy and be done with it. Not no regrets but few at least.
Now a 40's English Tech, stick of Palmolive, an Omega boar in my own hand carved Ash handle, good old Benjamin's Bay Rum and a pot of Astral will seldom if ever disappoint but a Hone 15, Simpsons Chubby 2 Synth, Wickham's Parma Violet Soap and Balm and the shaving streets feel paved with gold. Straight razors alas, are a recipe for disaster in my untrained hands and a step too far in my skill quest.
Besides, a vintage DE, self-made brush (handle anyway) and time honoured techniques speak to my romantic, sentimental heart and love of tradition and all things seemingly old fashioned.

I am in it for the experience. Results are just an extra.
If there was no variety of soaps, razors and brushes there probably wouldn't be ATG or other forums.
Those who just want a great shave are rarely on the forums or don't have a daily habit of browsing as we do

I have to admit I wouldn't be buying shaving products without a means to an end. That being excellent shaves. I do appreciate the emotional aspect of waiting for something to arrive, being involved in a group purchase or even just chatting with friends on the forum. But I also definitely would balance that with a productive aspect; attaining better shaves.
I suppose we are all somewhat in this frame of mind, otherwise we would be buying everything shaving related and not be fussed as to the results.
I started of with an EJ89, TOBS cream and a Vulfix mixed. I switched from cartridges as I kept getting small pimples. Infact initially I kept using the Mach 3 just switched from canned goo. The result was almost instant no goo no pimples. Moved onto the EJ89 and things improved. The next step up ATT- even better. So I'm always looking to improve my shave, but somewhere along these years I've become a collector!
Guess that's just how the cookie crumbles in terms of love for the hobby.

I dare you to go and have a shave with a good cart, don't use the can goo crap. Use the rest of your software you'd use with one of your DE shaves and see how it goes. I think a fair few would be surprised. Personally it was never the carts that gave me bad shaves, well never the carts that were half decent to start with. For me I went back and started using carts as well as DE, and SE razors with my new software and boom. I whittled it down to 3 major problems that had been causing me to have bad shaves, poor prep, poor software and even worse technique.

I find myself agreeing (on the whole) with @Wayne. I've only had two razors that didn't agree with me -- the R41 and a Giesen & Forsthoff that required a minimum of 8 passes to reduce stubble. If I put a Polsilver blade in any other razor, I'm going to get a BBS. I currently using the R95, One Blade Genesis, and the venerable Progress. Two are SS and give me a "wow" satisfaction, while the Progress is still considered by many to be the finest shaver on the market.

If my goal was consistently great shaves I'd go back to a cartridge razor and canned goo. I enjoy trying all the different products, expanding my knowledge and interacting with the online community... The actual shave plays quite a minor role in reality, it's 10 minutes every couple of days, I spend far more time on here
+1. I largely agree; but to me it's more about mastering and refining technique. I enjoy using different combinations of soaps, brushes, and razors to see what can be done to improve the overall experience.

I've not bought anything shave related this year*, I've not changed my razor or added to my two brush rotation or used different blades. Soaps have changed as I've used up the dregs and Cologne has for the same reason.
Excellent one pass with a touch up shaves are the result except where I've forgotten how to get the best lather from a particular soap. I've probably knocked the time it takes down by a quarter over the year as well.
Except shave balm which I don't have a stock of.

Myself, I have bad skin on my face for at least 7-8 months of the year and normally go into hibernation in the Autumn, Winter and Spring months when its at it's worse. I suffer from psoriasis, it was this that put me on the wet shaving path. It also helped me to maintain some form of socialising when I had bad flare ups, albeit via the computer.
It has been an odd journey when I think about it. I have met so many wonderful, supportive, well balanced and just decent kind hearted souls since joining the community. I feel as if I have grown and matured since first getting involved back in 2014. More so than any other 4 year period of my past.
The people who know me well, know that this year I have really focused on getting shot of the Psoriasis. I have tried so many natural things, the last being a near on total elimination diet. This saw me lose two stone in 4 weeks. It did have an effect on the psoriasis and for me confirmed that it was food related as it had started to clear. I have since taken intolerance tests and the results confirmed my thoughts. I can't tell you how nice it is to shave two days in a row, when I should be suffering right now. Psoriasis got me into this community but it is this community that will keep me here, so while shaving is something I look forward to more and more each day it's the community that keep me involved to the degree that I am. Being in the position to serve the wet shaving community as a soap maker is just the icing on the cake for me, it really is. I ask, what more can a person want in life than to do what he enjoys every day and to be around decent folk who appreciate it?
I am really fortunate to be where I am right now in life, I really do feel privileged.
Now then, where is @Sid James? Get your coloring pencils out, it's time for label ideas. Man, you are one funny guy, that label you did was just magic!
For anyone who does not have a clue what I am talking about I ran a small competition for a label design for the Classic 24. While everyone was serious, Sid's entry was this below.
I liked it so much, and while it didn't win I did get it professionally printed as a label and sent it on a tub of Classic 24 to him. I do appreciate a great sense of humor and your timing was perfect. Thank you again Sid for making me laugh so much.
Shaving is so much more than just shaving for me, it's become my way of life.
Oh, I nearly forgot to answer or attempt to answer @Nishy your initial question. I believe we all buy shaving related things for the same reason most people do things in groups, or to be apart of a certain community, it provides us with a talking point, a common interest. The receiving of items and new things is very rewarding in itself but I think that alone over time would be lost if there was no community of like minded people you could share that experience with.
