The Great Cream Experiment

I’m a soap guy. But somehow an occasional cream seems to make its way into my den. I’ve liked a few; most notably Proraso Sandalwood, Palmolive menthol and Harris Arlington, and have bought them several times. Over the years most others were PIFfed to shave pals here in brick and mortar world, some to online cyber buds.

This evening I went to stash a fresh tube of P-Red in the bureau drawer and realized that somehow I seem to have amassed what is for me, a staggering number of shave creams. Five in total; one used only occasionally, four brand spanking new. But I’m a soap guy. How did this happen? I can’t have this…

So here’s a novel idea. Rather than sell, pif or toss them, I’m going to actually use them. I don’t know how long it will take. I know I don’t have the patience or attention span to do it exclusively. But I‘m going to make a concerted effort to use them frequently and then return to my favorite soaps for the long haul. I suspect this will be a months long experience, likely taking me well into 2027 or beyond. We shall see. I also reserve the right to throw in the occasional hard soap as a palette cleanser. I’ll try to limit myself to AoS unscented, Fine’s Snake Bite, and MWF, but no guarantees that something else won’t slip through unexpectedly.

One more self imposed semi-constraint on the experience is that I will try to use my boar brushes more often than badger (I can’t not use my badgers, I love my badgers). That should help reduce the elapsed overall cream consumption time to some degree.

The ASW tub of Aloe is actually a 50/50 blend of that and DRH Arlington. I’d say the tub is approximately slightly more than half full. All the other creams are new and unused. The Castle Forbes, George F. Trumper and P-Red() are all recent arrivals. I’m looking forward to the CF and GFT creams as they’re new for me, and hope to enjoy their scents. The jar of Baume.BE has been sitting in my drawer for somewhere close to a decade. I kind of forgot about it as it became buried and surrounded by my burgeoning soap collection. Only thing that remains is to decide which cream starts this fiasco!

It was a no brainer. Baume got the opening day start. I broke out a small scooper and my rarely used but really good looking orange La Birichine lather bowl, and had at it. My water to product ratio was off. It’s been a long while since I last used any cream and I was treating it like a thirsty soap.

The scent was pleasant. Post shave, top notch. I’m guessing that when I nail the water situation the lather will be a bit sturdier and more protective.

Shave 1 in the great cream experiment is in the books.

It would have been nice to see the soap mixed

I decided that Baume needed a shot at redemption. And, just as I’m really a soap guy not a cream guy, I’m also a face latherer not a bowl latherer. So I pulled out Bob’s Big Boar (28mm of thirsty bristle!) and loaded straight to the brush then straight to the face as always. That would be Bob Quinn of Elite Razor fame. I’ll try to snap a photo of the next cream lather (after today, that is :D). Tbh and fwiw, as I’ve long stated, I just don’t see the point in scooping product into a bowl to create lather that will simply be painted on the face as a mere coating. Might as well just used canned glop. No offense intended to you who are (perhaps, misguided?) bowl latherers.

The Elite razor knot eats lather when it hasn’t been used consistently. Yep, you guessed it, this brush hasn’t gotten wet in at least seven or eight months at this point. It was really thirsty! I loaded for a good 30 seconds, and after slowly adding water and lathering for a few minutes, the knot barely had enough lather remaining for my second pass. After a few more uses during this great cream experiment the disappearing lather phenomenon should subside.

The two pass shave was BBS excellent.

For want it’s worth, the Baume cream smells way nicer than I expected. It’s actually quite pleasant. Today’s lather was a bajillion times more to my liking than previously.

When I use this fat handle Canadian Tech I say to myself, “I can use this razor exclusively for the rest of my life. Don’t know what it is, it’s just a perfect razor. I don’t say that about any of my other Gillettes.
