Support in 3D Design

Hello Members,

I'm working in the Electric Vehicle design industry in Germany, recently during a trip Gillette blew my mind

As long as I can remember I've used a Mach 3 and always used the blades well beyond the recommended usage due to a mixture of laziness and costs..

I forgot my Mach 3 during a trip and bought the attached 8 disposable Sensor 3 blades - in general packaging waste drives me crazy, Amazon packages x5 bigger than necessary - I noticed accidently that the shaver blade is not fixed to the handle, so I've just got 8 handles where I only need 1. Ok probably nothing new for the members in this forum but over 2 billion disposable razors end up in landfills alone in the the U.S. per year, very unnecessary!

I live in a city in Germany called Solingen or the 'City of Blades' as its worldwide renowned for high quality kitchen knives with hundreds of companies expertising in the industry in this city.

This brings me to the ATG forum and I'd like to reach out to the forum members as I'd like to bring to life a really high quality razor with no plastic and naturally replaceable razors, I understand this is nothing new but I haven't seen anything online which would convince me personally to replace my Mach 3, mostly due to the effort required to handle the single safety blades with current models.

I reached out to some of the experts in the city of blades however in general they request some engineering 3D drawings to produce a prototype and would like to reach out to the forum if anyone would like to discuss the project?

Thanks and looking forward to participating in the group :)

Welcome to ATG.

I believe what you're thinking of is already in existence. Have a look at the Leaf and Twig razors. Also the Mars and Broman among others.

With regards to the effort of handling blades, I can't see this being avoided unless the blades are already set in a disposable head - in which case we're back to cartridge razors. Injector razors like the Supply, Schick or Parker use a loading mechanism that reduces the small risk somewhat.

thanks a lot all for your feedback!

The Leaf (very nice, a little over engineered), Mars & Broman (awesome design) would not personally - as a lazy person - convince me to give up my Mach and handle blades.

Here's what I see for the masses, a handle for life (stainless steel or hybrid of stainless steel & wood) with a metal 3 blade cartridge system with a super easy docking mechanism.

No Plastics - this means the blades are fully recyclable and people will as long as its convenient.

I've got some crazy expensive quotes for 3D modelling so if anyone's got a basis I can work with, I'd be really happy to discuss!

How much is an all-metal cartridge going to cost? Considering that one of the biggest gripes with cartridge razors is the cost of the cartridges I can’t think that producing an even more expensive one is going to sell enough to make the manufacturing costs worthwhile.

Still though, go ahead and design it. I'll tell you what I think.
Naysayer or nay, it'll at least be a fun process and far be it from me to stifle innovation before it has begun.

I think this is the challenge. The cartridge head will have to be metal rather than wood if it's going to be recycled with no user input to separate. The cartridge head will probably be more complex than a DE baseplate to machine but similar in size. The cost of a RazoRock baseplate would give you a crude figure of a machined cost per metal cartridge or the Blackland Era plate from a 3D metal printed version. Either way, it's a lot more than a Gillette Proglide.

I'm not trying to be a pooper. An environmentally sound solution for cartridge users would be great but I just can't see this being cost effective. It would need to be a permanent metal cartridge frame with an ejectable blade set - then you're back to handling blades and the current options.

David,
Welcome to ATG.

Since turning my back on multiblade cartridge systems and learning how to use Double Edge and Single Edge razors properly I honestly question whether the world needs yet another multiblade system. However, I wish you luck with your venture, I'm sure you'll find it a challenge.

Regards,
Chris

Twinjectors are probably the closest thing to what you're proposing but they're still an edge short of the triple blade head idea that you seem to be wedded to.
Is there something about the three blade head that is beneficial, relative to others, i.e. single-, double-edge or injector?
