Straight Shaving for Beginners

When I am in a rush, yes...
Yea, I suppose so but the last thing I want to be with a straight razor is in a rush. I take about 20 minutes to do a 4 pass shave longer if you include cleaning/drying the razor, stropping it before putting it away, cleaning the sink and putting on AS. I always consider the shave time as from entering to leaving the bathroom not just the actual time it takes to do just a pass. So yea 10 minutes for a 3 pass shave is good.

He cleans his sink after a shave from soap scum and applies aftershave as do I after every shave (cleaning)

Bob, don’t get me wrong, I am not in a rush often and when I am, most of the time I would use a DE anyways. This was to illustrate a principle. And you are correct. I do not take that long to lather because I use synthetic brushes. For me the shave starts with the creation of the lather. If you want me to be more accurate, my preshave usually is a hot shower, but I am not including that in the 10 minutes. And the shave for me ends with the application of the AS. The upkeep of the razor the post stropping is part of the grooming ritual for me, but not part of the shave itself. I dry my razors , strop them, oil them inspect them, sometimes hone them after a shave. If all that is included it might take me 2 hours for a single shave...

Regards,

Sam

Yup, cleaning the soap scum from the sink/wash basin.

Yea, everyone has a different routine. I never considered a shower as part of a shave routine either. For me the shave starts when I enter the bathroom, lay out my gear, fill the sink with cold water and lather up for the first pass and ends when I walk out after the post shave clean up. I strop my razor on linen post shave to make sure my edge is dry. I budget 1/2 hour for all that. I do my regular stropping on linen and leather in the evening in prep for the following mornings shave

Sorry guys, that was my admittedly poor attempt at humour. If I didn’t leave the bathroom the same way I found it (sparkling) then my shaving gear would most likely be found on eBay or in the wheelie bin!

I strop immediately before the shave on linen and leather. Post shave I clean the razor with soap, dry it and then strop on linen or canvas just to get rid of the minute moisture at the edge of the razor so it doesn’t deteriorate. Sounds like our routines are somewhat similar Bob...

Thanks for these - if anything, they indicate that a straight razor has fewer scratch marks after 10k hone and stropping than the commercial blades and this is borne out by the fact that straights usually give a smoother shave when compared to a fresh AC blade.
