Old Guard vs New School … SE1 vs La Faulx

Rotating through a few Artist Club razors this weekend, I ended up revisiting my Above the Tie SE1 Razor and thought I’d put it up against my Atelier Durdan La Faulx Razor ++

My SE1 is from 2016, and was my staple daily driver so I was interested how the more technical CAD approach of my recent La Faulx would perform. The SE1 is very simple compared to the complexity of the La Faulx which is machined down where needed to get a lighter/smaller head with some beautiful curves and intricacies leaving the ATT looking somewhat clunky in comparison.

The La Faulx is a very refined shaver. It’s so smooth, very composed on the face, and has that slightly “quiet” delivery where it doesn’t feel like it’s doing much, but the reduction is there when you rinse. I feel it requires a little more finesse to find the angle compared to the SE1.

Switching over to the SE1, it’s a different experience. There’s more blade presence, more immediate engagement with the beard, and it feels like it gets to work a bit quicker. Not harsh, just more direct. Just set the angle and it does the job.

Both gave excellent shaves, just in slightly different ways. The La Faulx feels more measured and deliberate, while the SE1 leans into efficiency with ease. The SE1 wins under the nose as the blade sits much closer to the bar. ATG though the La Faulx is one of my most comfortable razors, so this is where it shines on the finishing passes.

Both great shavers, the La Faulx feels like a modern refinement of what the SE1 started … if I had to decide, the La Faulx is my keeper.
