Afternoon gentlemen, what is everyone's shaving routine and what products do you use, I've just converted so have yet to develop my routine and build a good selection of products. Pete

Not exactly sure what you are asking but mine goes something like this. First I fill the sink with cold water, then load the brush from the soap puck, splash water on face, face lather and shave, repeat 3 more times. To finish I wet face apply alum, clean brush, rinse alum off, dry face and apply aftershave.

I usually use a straight razor so there is more to the clean up than rinsing the brush but with a DE/SE that is about it.

I am not too fussy about what products I use and even if I did say which are favoured it might not do you any good because many things in shaving are personal choices so there is a great deal of YMMV.

Bloke
Stripped down to bare basics -

  • Soak brush in warm water
  • Bloom soap in warm water, no blooming required for creams
  • Into the shower
  • Wash face in shower
  • Finished in the shower, head to a sink full of warm water
  • Face lather
  • Merkur 34G and blade of choice
  • Two passes, rinse with warm water in between
  • Plenty of cold water applied to face
  • Splash of aftershave
  • Done
Products last night were -

  • Clinique Fash Wash
  • Merkur 34G Razor
  • Feather Blade
  • Rooney Badger Brush
  • TOBS Peppermint Shaving Cream
  • Fine Italian Citrus Aftershave
I've been to the top of the mountain and back on all the different shaving products. Waste of money. Settled on a few basics.

I have quite a slimmed down routine to what I used to have. It's usually after a shower so I've already washed my face -

1 - Fill the sink with hot water and drop my brush in there
2 - Choose a soap
3 - Give the brush a little squeeze and flick to remove excess water
4 - Load brush with soap
5 - Wet face and then face lather, no bowl for me
6 - Shave away giving the brush a reload as and when required if doing multiple passes
7 - Little blob of E45 cream if the shave was a touch rough
8 - Aftershave / Splash

I used to go the whole hog with a facewash and letting the lather stand on my stubble to soften but over time I've found that not chasing the perfect BBS shave, a bit more fruit and veg in the diet and getting to bed a bit earlier has done wonders for what I thought was my overly sensitive skin!

Product wise I find Wickhams, Saponifico Varesino and OSP give me great shaves. A good quality bath soap is also great for a pre-shave facewash such as those from the 3 makers I've already mentioned or something like the Savon de Marseille available on Ebay - I certainly get better results with these then I have the more widely produced supermarket shelf facewashes. Everyone's different though.

See my SOTD as I have a set of standard products I use. As for process;
  • Strop blade if not using a DE
  • Soak brush in warm water
  • Wash face or shower
  • Apply pre shave/oil/bloom water
  • Shake brush and load soap
  • Scuttle or face to develop lather
  • Shave....
  • Post shave thayers and then AS

The best thing to concentrate on is your lathering and shaving technique. Learn what constitutes a good lather and how to make it. Learn how to find the right angle on blade and how to maintain it while following the contours of your face. Let the weight of the razor do the work, in other words do not apply pressure to the blade. When you get those right most shaving soaps/creams, razors and shave brushes won't stand in the way of getting a good shave. Shaving is mostly learning the basics of good technique and the gear is mostly a secondary consideration.

It might be a good idea to say what you have for gear so some specific comment could be made on that. Good luck.

Many thanks for the reply Bob, great info and exactly what I needed, I guess it's like everything, lots of practice to develop technique, the razor I have is an Edwin jagger DE89LBL, the brush is a semogue 1438 and the soap is Taylor of old bond street sandlewood

Your DE razor, shave brush and shave soap are more than adequate to provide you with a good shave. Be aware that you boar brush may need about 2 weeks of every day use to break in. By that I mean for the tips to flag/split and soften up.

You can try placing the top cap of the razor against your cheek with the handle parallel to the floor and the slowly rotate the handle downward till you just start to feel the blade against your face. That should give you a good starting angle and you can adjust from there to suit.
