Toby, there's been an explosion of knife crime in the UK, especially in inner cities. Banning sending straight razors and even putting age certification for DE blades is quite befitting of how things are in the UK. Instead of addressing the underlying causes of knife crime (eg gang violence, drugs, etc) they would rather stop sellers on ebay selling 50 year old DE blades.

That is typical of governments. We have a similar situation here in Canada but you substitute guns for knives and it all revolves around gangs and drugs. They have tightened gun control laws to a ridiculous point and has no effect on gangs and drugs. It is just easier to pass more of the same laws than do anything about the actual cause of the problems.

I am aware, and it's everywhere, they put the blame on inanimate objects instead of the criminals, and they won't let the police do their job. Laws only work on the law abiding citizens.

Are there any courier services in the private sector?

I believe Tuffnels offer a domestic service for such items, and the costs are very much reflected.

If you ship a straight razor and state it is a butter knife is it OK?

Possibly, but there will always be the risk of losing it.

Royal mail to stop shipping blades from april

Came across this when making up a parcel today. I know that there was an age restriction on blades sent in the post for a while and eBay recently stopped selling razor blades completely. Now it seems royal mail won't ship them at all from April....

They can when it comes to things with blades that aren’t prohibited, other couriers will take straight razors. I did look into this a few weeks back and found two or three that would, not being a straight shaver though I've forgotten which they were.

You shouldn't have to lie to send something... Solution is simple, stop using Royal Mail and opt for a sharps friendly courier. Sending blades and straights will be more expensive than it used to be, bit like everything else these days! Just have to suck it up.
