Pils is a RAD killer but...

Hi All,

Two years ago after 6 years journey into shaving world I tried Pils razor on loan from great forum member.
This razor almost instantly killed my RAD and need for keep on trying new things.

Having tried more than 100 of each of shaving components I found my happy place and now is time to look back and reflect.

I really enjoy trying new razors and think I might buy in near future Muhle Rocca Birch handle razor ( Opinions welcome!)but Pils become my trusted companion no matter what. ( I have 2)

Maybe to give you fuller picture I should say what I was using for last 2 years

Pils razor. Yes no other razor. I sold a lot and kept only few under my bed. Especially my treasured Feather

Brushes: Simpson Captain BEST in Ebony, Thater 4125/1, Fine Synthetic brush and Zenith. In storage I have my unique Simpson 2XL made specially for me by Mark and Plisson I decided to sell

Soaps/Creams: MdC, Old Spice, Kiss My Face and P.160. On the way Castle Forbes Lavender( on the whim buy)

Blades: Triton R3 (by far best ever blade), London Bridge and multiple Gillettes

After: Always Thayers Witch Hazel follow by my choice of moisturising cream

No matter what I choose from that list I always get minimum DFS to BBS. No that I try as I have no need to chase BBS

My opinion is if I tried Pils early into my journey I might discard it as you need to know your face, good prep and technique. As matter of fact I believe that good prep is a responsible for at least 80% of good shave. If you fail your prep you fail your shave.

Now today I still want try new things as using one razor became bit boring thats why I am tempted to buy Muhle Rocca( spice up this relationship with PILS:) ) . I do not want go on any waiting list or choose my perfect gap blade. I know they are great razors and quality is amazing but I am not a fan of waiting. I had Wolfman and it was okay but Pils won that battle.

Another razor sounds interesting but I am bit afraid is One Blade. 1 is price, 2 weird looking. I know I am odd!

I love this hobby and love trying new thing but I strictly believe if you want achieve shaving nirvana try to use limited set up for 6 months plus. I am not stoping you to try new things or use it exclusively. Just make sure in 60% of your shaves is standardised. Have a Mon to Fri one set and weekend for experimenting. Thats how I am keeping my hobby alive and getting great shaves at same time.

Most importantly using same razor allows you to polish your technique and see your is your weak spots.

At any point I do not know what to od next I come here and Voila! I am enabled to new product ad your honest opinions. Home sweet home, hobby never dies!

Thank you for being here for me.

Best,
Jacek

After trying many different DEs the only two I have kept are my feather asd2 and PILs. Great razors. If I could only have one razor it would be my Mongoose, but I love rotating between the 3 razors I own.

@Celar36 have you tried the Mongoose? If so how did you get on???

@MPH long time ago but I think I didnt give it time it deserved and crossed it out.

Now I know better:)

I am in search for my number 2 and 3 razors. While I think Rocca might fulfil second spot. I am yet to consider 3rd spot. Preferably single edge :)

Reading through your post has helped me reflect too. My advice and it is all IMO, from all the razors you mention as potential buys it would say save your money. If you want to change things up completely the one blade is a shout, still not as smooth all over the face as the PILS but not bad.

I have also started to make use of razors that I haven't used in over a year, yesterday was the ATT S2, tonight I may pull out the Gillette Fatboy and I have my EJ89 in my sights too. Good fun revisiting older razors but it's sti the PILS for me.

The General I find better than the One Blade.

I truly believe that keeping it minimalist during week helps you hone yourskills and weekend is for pure enjoyment and discovering old and new.

I still hunt for pils razor stand:)

Well The General? I think I am well behind. Research time!

It's... alive!
I haven't tried the Pils, but from what I understand, it's a mild, efficient, very well built razor.
For me, the Rockel SE-P CC (now unobtainium, sadly), The Leaf, Homelike Start (either the 0.90 OC or the 1.18 CC), Phoenix Artisan Accoutrements Ascension DOC are like that.

How does the homelike compare to the other two...... I seem to have missed this one!
It’s really good. I have the set which comes with .69, .90 and 1.18 SB plates and .90 OC. The .90 OC is my favourite, it’s very smooth with not much blade feel but very efficient. It does need the conventional 30-ish angle as opposed to the much shallower one of the Pils and AS-D2 though. I’ve not tried the .69 and 1.18 plates yet.

If you like you can borrow it once the whole virus thing has blown over.

Quite a few razors coming up here again.

By the looks of things, RAD is still inevitable and only AFTER trying everything on the market is it finally possible to put that „what if“ out of your mind.

I too am soon to give the Pils a second go with what I hope to be considerably improved technique and slicker lather...and a massive selection of different blades.

My what if is gone now. Now is about having in rotation 2 more razors to avoid monotonous shave. We whom found the one still can enjoy rest as it is our hobby and not just means to end:)

Enjoy your journey as it is great one
