probably not a problem for most. cranky wives people with no workshops, sleeping babies or grandchildren. or being in a nursing home. apparently my penning is loud even though I'm barely tapping. anyone ever find a way to do it quieter? rubber ball peen hammer? I haven't been able to find one I've set it on towels put towels in between it nothing seems durable or effective

I can't think of a way round that. By necessity there needs to be a certain level of impact. If you put loads of rubber or towels under it, the whole thing will move but the rivet won't deform I would imagine.

You need to work on a VERY solid surface, the energy won't be applied to the rivet otherwise. An anvil or the side of a large hammer will do.

Wow, I guess it could be irritating if you're doing it all day long, but a razor or two every so often shouldn't be much of a problem. Other then that, peen under a thick blanket with miner's helmet, that should deaden the sound enough! Can you get outside on occasion? That might be a decent compromise during the spring and summer. Other then that, just turn up the tv and get to work!

it's amazing how the answers are right in front of us LOL I can go outside but I have to lean over in a certain place set up a certain way so that I can even hit it with the hammer but that is a possibility but the turn the TV up option has been working and if you knew me you would understand it when I say I took care of the problem personally lol I can't stand up anymore but I'm 6'2 200 lb hair down to my butt pierced left ear and a constant frown LOL so when I tell somebody we can do this one of two ways they usually see it my way at least that's how it went down this time, nobody else really gives a poop and they want to see the razors when I'm done with them so it's working out. but you are full of good advice LOL you might want to put a Band-Aid on that?
