I wanted each of my children to be server because it teaches life lessons. They worked on Sunday afternoons and said the after church crowd were poor tippers often leaving a quarter regardless of the price of the meal. This was circa 1997.

I was once complimented for being nice at my neighborhood grocery store staff. I'm thinking, who goes into a grocery store and give the staff some grief?
My time working in restaurants was from about 1977 until about 1987. Servers today actually have it better than I did. Back when I was doing it the "standard" tip was 15%. Now the "standard" tip is 20%. This is in addition to the inflationary rise in prices of food and drink.

The whole tipping thing in the US is broken, the restaurant should be paying their staff properly not expecting the customers to bring their wage up to the minimum.
There are tip jars and tipping options when you pay by card at places that provide no servers. If you are familiar with Subway sandwich restaurants, you have to hit no tip or whatever tip you want to check out. I think the stores are just hoping their customers will feel guilty for going with the no tip option. Plus, who knows who actually gets the tip. I suspect the store keeps the money.

That will be the day I hand over a tip for getting a cup of coffee at Timmies or another takeout place. Yea, tipping has gone berserk.

So a quick update, the total number of missing parcels thanks to Evri is now up to four. One of them, from Mountain Warehouse, has been refunded. One of them, from a third party selling on Amazon, is in dispute with Amazon telling me to contact Evri and Evri (via chatbot) telling me to contact Amazon. I have pointed out to Amazon that under UK law my contract is with the seller and not the courier, this is after they had rejected my complaint on the grounds that I hadn't contacted the courier when I told them that it was not possible to do so.

The third parcel has been re-sent by the company (George) but again via Evri, so am not expecting anything there. The fourth is another third party via Amazon purchase which I'm expecting is going to result in another fight to try and get a refund.

Have you spoken to your credit card company for a refund?

Evri (back when they were Hermes) successfully managed to not deliver the clothes for my mother's funeral back in 2018 FOUR times in the lead up to the day. Complaints, phone calls, reassurances that it would be there the next day, all for nothing. I had to cobble stuff together for the funeral in the end. I wrote a big complaint email to them and they didn't even reply to that or acknowledge it. Dreadful company.

Late yesterday afternoon I drove to the subway for a ride downtown to meet a friend in the East Village (Greenwich). We saw the new film Becoming Led Zeppelin which was very, very good. If you appreciate the group, their music or a solid well done rockumentary, I recommend you see it. After the movie we ate dinner in a Ukrainian restaurant. I had no alcohol, but drank plenty of water, even had a mug of black tea with dessert. After dinner we said our goodbyes, and I trudged a few blocks in the bitingly cold wind and snow to the subway for my ride home. As I’m walking the thought crossed my mind that maybe I should have hit the men’s room before my hour plus trip home. Nah, I’ll be ok…

I waited 10 minutes for my first train and less than 10 for my transfer. So far so good! Some guy with a Pit Bull service dog got on the train and got into a tussle with a drunk (he reeked!) who was smoking a joint in the subway car. He started screaming at the guy, “put that out! put that out!” He swiped at the guy’s dangling blunt and a thug nearby said, “it’s ok, just don’t touch him, don’t touch him.” The guy with the service dog then jumped on the drunk and ripped the joint out of his mouth. If I’m not mistaken the drunk looked like he was about to pass out, but this was an interesting g development… physical contact… I said to myself nothing good is going to come of this, so I got up and walked to the other end of the car. Amazingly the dog laid serenely on the floor of the car while all this was going on! Fortunately it was otherwise a non incident and we all shrugged it off as another evening in the Big Apple.

So I get to my stop, walk to the garage and get in my auto and hit the road for my 18 minute ride home. By this time the pressure in my bladder was intense. Finally, close to home, I'm off the highway four blocks from my house. I Gotta Pee! A cop pulls me over. Said I was doing 41 in a 25. I said i was out for dinner and I have to pee. I live two blocks away. So of course, the focker took my license and registration and went to look me up. Five minutes later (five minutes!) he comes back and says he’s letting me go because of my age. Thank you officer (you punk!). Finally home, I ran past the dog and took a good one. Aaahhh… 🥳
