New Mulcuto

I came across this a while ago and found out from others that Mulcuto stopped making razors a while back but someone bought the name and is using some of the old design elements to produce a new razor called the Mulcuto #1.

Has anyone tried this razor? I don't believe Mulcuto ever produced that dual comb design (mine is an Emir), but just wanted to know if it was worth buying since it is coming from Germany and so now I will be the one to complain about outrageous shipping rates, long ship times, and clearing customs. ;-)

A few razors on the site that look interesting, I wasn't aware Boker made a DE.

Interesting. There aren't many dual combs around and I actually like them for the most part.
However, the head on this one looks like it has a bit of FaTip/Pearl, a bit of Parker and a hint of the Eclipse Red Ring, too.

What I'm wondering is how well it's going to clamp the blade, whether it's going to be like, say, the Timeless/Wolfman Guerilla and their ilk or more like the Muhle R41, whose looks are deceiving and support of the blade is just along two rather thin lines (at least on mine).

Noteworthy - they seem to have misspelled Jermyn Street and the company name yields no relevant search results.

I believe the head is a copy of the Emir, which I recently acquired.

Great shaver and very efficient. That was why I was interested in the Mulcuto.

Funny you should mention the London address, as I was hoping a Londoner would weigh in on that place in London that sells the razor. When I tried earlier to google the two storefronts, I also came up with a blank. Sending emails using their form on the website and using the email address given produced no response after a couple of attempts.

Would you happen to have any side photos of the Emir head?
From the two photos you posted, it looks like the Emir has rather substantial lather channels and might be lacking bottom support for the blade in the area.

Got my pics of the taken apart Emir and a pic from the seller. Blade support is pretty good. Thin cap though and so angle need to be pretty precise.
Cheers. :)

That shape is strangely familiar. It seems fairly different from the current offering, but I could have sworn I'd seen the Emir head design elsewhere, too. Might've been a clone.

The new Mulcuto is a nice little razor in my mind, but does not work very well for me. I don't get a clean "baby butt" shave with it. But surely that does not necessarily mean that it's a bad razor ;-)
They go much cheaper on the german bay. I fot mine from there ;-)

I've ordered one, couldn't resist that handle

According to the German forums Mulcuto also have a 100% stainless steel version currently in the pre-production stage which can be seen alongside the chrome plated zamak version here:

Received mine this morning so naturally used it for my SOTD...

Build quality: It feels fairly solid in the hand, the zinc alloy casting looks nice and crisp... When it comes to chrome plating there are three grades, Fatip grade at the bottom, Merkur grade is a bit better and Muhle grade which is generally jewelry quality... The Mulcuto comes in somewhere near Merkur, sadly nothing impressive but I would like to think this is variable and I just got a inferior example (I've messaged the manufacturer to confirm ) It looks good in the photo's but there are a couple of trouble spots.

The head design has an open comb one side and safety bar the other, despite this the blade exposure and gap appear to be identical both sides so the open comb would likely only come into it's own when doing your first pass on a lot of growth... The blade exposure is medium/high and blade gap small. Blade centering was not an issue, I popped a blade in, screwed the handle on and it was perfectly aligned which is always nice on a budget razor.

In use I must say it was one of the smoothest DE razors I've ever used, virtually no blade feel on the face, the sweet spot is quite small and preferred angle shallow. For me it felt mild but efficient, I am nearly BBS after 3 passes, with no buffing... Which isn't bad after a first try with a new razor.

That's just my initial impressions, which are subject to change without notice :p:
