New hobby-making up some shave brushes using original simpson uk badger

Lathe cames up the cheapest of the equipment. I paid mine 350 euros but with all the chucks, drills etc. it come up to 1000 easily.

One tip for sanding, once you finish the sanding with lathe on, turn it off and manually sand with the grain. That way you're going to remove sanding marks.

I managed to secure some rather nice 900 year old moroccan Thuya burr wood-was expensive at around £112 for a 12inch length-so short of £40 per brush handle assuming I can get 3x from each length-so proving to be an expensive hobby? so I ended up buying all 4 sections~?


and could only get it in 3 inch blocks- or 75mm-so be a lot of waste?
as most handles are around 45 diameter at. most?

the small trial handle was from an earlier scrap of Thuya burr with little grain
as compared to the larger blocks of wood?

have a feeling that polished it will look rather nice for a handle?

Thuya burl is quite nice. I tend to get 45x45mm profile or 2x2 inches if there are no other options. Usually I turn the handles in range of 39 to 42mm in diameter and rarely longer than 7cm so from a 12inch block you should get about 5 handles.

if I make shorter handles I could

In the meantime
and as

the simpson badger hair I have to hand at present
ranges in length from 100+mm to over 110mm

so I need to drill around 50-55mm inside my handles -
so they really need to be that bit longer than modern handles?

as I tend to set the loft on my brushes from 52mm to 54mm only


if I make some for the shorter 60mm chinese badger I could get more handles from a length for sure
and even shorter for the synthetic knots ?

Can you tie the knot and shave the excess hair?

I am fortunate inasmuch as I already own
a leica microtome slicing machine for my microscope specimens

and it uses an ultra sharp blade fine for cutting hair no problem
and also have old fashioned cut and Japanese made old fashioned cut throat razors
which also slice through hair with ease
easier to use the full length as the longer hairs give a softer springier face feel absent from the chinese badger brushes
