it's a standard blade that there's a couppla spares here from a ride-on mower... & the blade needs a little sharpening... butt the "cheap" mower was beat-up by the the dude who gave it to us...

I don't know the proper name for these things

Being someone who doesn't spend a quarter when a dime will do I put one of these in an electric drill and worked the cutting edge of the lawnmower blade until it was ding free and 'looked' sharp, I have read that too sharp a blade produces no benefit.

I didn't remove the blade although that would have made the job easier, I couldn't because the blasted nut wouldn't budge.

Whole job took less than two minutes if you are looking for a cheap fix.

Probably reverse threads since the motor turns the blade clockwise. What you did will work, but it is important the blade be balanced so that removing too much on one side and not enough on the other can cause problems.

There are other possible dangers to guard against also. You may also want to remove the spark plug wire from the spark plug to prevent accidental starting of the gasoline powered mower while you are working on it. You may also want to take precautions against gasoline spillage while working on it. It all depends on how far you want to go in the prevention of an accident.

you & your fancy sharpening kit... we've got a manual yard gear sharpening kit... i just keep forgetting & a bit lazy to remove the blade & not over sharpen it... a sharpening might happen a little later.... after some leaf mulching gets done... writing a note now... hahaha...

You are right, I should have flagged up those points and they were points I followed when I had petrol power mowers up until 3 years ago, now gone electric. My mower was always a swine to start after it had been on its side, I am guessing that the float stayed open and soaked the plug.

Neighbour was telling me that he had taken his Atco mower, a giant of a thing by English standards, to have an end of season service, blade sharpening, new plug, change of oil etc. He went to pick it up and was told that someone else had collected it and loaded it into a Ford Transit, they even paid the small balance in cash. He was made to feel like a crook, the garden centre suggesting that he was part of the scam

How would anyone take those circumstances and twist it into accusing your friend of deceit and chicanery? He must’ve been flummoxed beyond belief!

I had mine in the right arm on the fifteenth. For the last two years I’ve had the “senior dose.” This year’s jab gave me genuine, actual pain in the arm for about a full day afterwards. On top of my already bad shoulder, it was a wicked but thankfully, brief stretch.
Must say mine hurt a bit, let’s see what the next 24 hours brings. I get the “you're at higher risk” , due to my heart condition, dose. Didn’t have the covid though.
