I have a few Merkur razors and with every one of them came 1-5 Merkur SP blades.

I have always used a Merkur SP blade for the first shave to kind of break it in like intended from Merkur. They always give me a nice smooth shave with little to no skin irritation and never a cut or nick. However, they are never mentioned by anyone (to my knowledge) and I wonder why?

Looked for them online today and were very surprised by the humongous price-tag on them; compared to the reasonable price on most of their razors.



Is it because they are amongst -if not- the most expensive blades there are? Or is there an other reason for them never to be mentioned?

I’ve read reports of them being rough, but I’ve found them perfectly ok if not as nice as a GSB. I wouldn’t buy any because there are a lot of blades I’d much prefer.

I've used a couple and didn't like them at all, very rough, and I wouldn't voluntarily use one again.

Because there are better blades out there that cost less than Merkur Plats. Merkur blades are generally a disappointment for experienced shavers; esp those who prefer keen blades.

I started out with a Merkur Futur and Merkur blades in 96 and am now starting to look at other blades out there. So far the three types I have tried, have been disappointing at best with one being a better paint scraper than a blade (Wilkinson Sword), one like a using a bottle cap (Merkurs now made in Czech Republic) and a Feather which is sharp but not smooth. I have tried the new Dovo blades which a Merkur reps stated are basically the old Merkur style and they do shave really well for me. I am going to see what other blades are out there and which suit my facial hair. I also have been head shaving for many years as well and the Merkurs have never been bad blades.

I have learned it is more like "To each his own" on what one likes and works well for them. I hope you find a blade you like and if you want the old style Merkur, try the Dovo. I get mine for a good price from a knife seller on line that usually has free shipping near holidays.

My first razor was a Merkur and the word on the forums around circa 2012 was that the blades in the box with the new Merkur could be more hit than miss, I remember the price even then was higher than most other blades too. And taking this on board, I never bothered trying the Merkur blades. Having got into blade sampling, I should really try them but I have already found great value for money and excellently performing blades at a fraction of the Merkur blades' cost. I probably won't now unless I were to buy a new Merkur razor.

You found ones that were cheaper in price that worked for you, which is great. I haven't had such luck, but I am looking. I am happy with the price I am paying for blades that work for my hair type and leave me no issues and no stubble growth the next day. I think I will try a Derby Green a few weeks, as for now, I want to get my face and head back to a good baseline before the change. 😊

I’ve used only the blades that came with my Merkur razors, and maybe one additional tuck, but it was so long ago I could be mistaken on that last point. My impression then was that they were very tuggy and pricey. Too many other blades were much more enjoyable to use.

Another blade I walked away from years ago but have recently tried again and now like very much, are the German made Wilkinson Sword blades 🤔 So I suppose based on this experience perhaps I should give the Merkur blades another trial.

After trying 15 different blades, I have found that for my beard growth there are about 3 blades that really work great for me. Treet Platinum gives me great shaves, followed by Nacet and as you guys suggested, the Personnas. I get so many BBS shaves with the Treet and Personna blades, I almost forgot what a bad shave was like. That is until I tried one of the other brands I bought to try. Pulled and tugged like crazy, making me have small whitehead bumps on my chin. Just awful. Just goes to show that there is always a blade or two out there that will match your beard growth.
