Having a run of poor shaves

I've had a string of years like that. After awhile you just learn to live with it.
Look for the little joys in life... like the tea hasn't gotten cloudy after sitting there in the pot over night.
You know the small miracles.

I usually leave a few days growth - I always get a great shave when I've had a few days off...
Same here.

When I started out DE shaving again I didn't realise that, as much as my learning technique, I was unable to use a lot of scented and fragranced items. This lead to learning that the best way to go forward was to stand back and do nothing for two or three days. Like Lee, providing I wasn't using another item which gave me a poor reaction, I always had a great shave with the extra growth and repaired skin.

Another thing which I'm still guilty of now and again, is rushing my shaves.

When I first started de shaving, my shaves gradually improved over a few months, then dipped and things got worse for a few months, before finally everything seemed to click and I finally consistently got shaves I was really happy with. No idea why.

That sounds like me. Probably due to rushing and thinking I know it all now.
