I'm not a Gin drinker, but looking to see what the fuss is about so I'm sitting here sipping a Greenall's and and Tonic. And its fairly minging TBH.
The tonic is far too bitter so what else is a good mixer with Gin? It was nicer straight than with this manky tonic stuff...:yuck::yuck:

I've added a slice of cucumber which has taken the edge of the tonic, but not enough...

Neat. It's just flavoured vodka.

To be frank, there's not much else to mix it with ... lemonade? The thing tonic brings it that really bitter astringent. You could try Angostura and a spot of fizzy water, I suppose, but in the end it's the gin you want to taste.

This is what I thought; neat it is just like vodka. I think I'll chalk it up to experience and leave the gin to trendy types and stick to Scotch and Bourbon..

I'm not a gin fanatic, but I do like it with bitter lemon, seen as a girls drink round these parts but I don't give a fliying fig :) you could always use it to make martinis. Let's not forget that gin was used to disguise the taste of tonic, or at least to make tonic more palatable:)

Sloe gin is nice, often go to a gin distillery in London where you can make and buy your own custom sloe gin. They also make excellent mixers for cocktails, some interesting concuctions including egg albumen.

Sloe gin is lovely.

I was only half joking about adding more gin, I'm not a fan of tonic either, but if you get the mix right G&T's nice. I like Bombay Sapphire, couple of fingers and not to heavy on the tonic. Too much tonic and it does get bitter.

I recently read this article about vermouth in Craftsmanship magazine, and I was intrigued to try what Julia Child called a "reverse Martini": still 5 to 1 ration, but the 5 is (a good-quality dry) vermouth and the 1 is gin. But generally, if I imbibe gin, I like it in a Martini. Here are my thoughts on that cocktail and how to make it.

This may have been the issue - too much tonic. Another try tonight:cheers:

I love Gin. Throw a slice of cucumber in with some tonic and slosh as much gin as you like in... happy days!

As has been mentioned above, it's all about the balance between the gin and the tonic, problem comes when people serve you in a hi-ball glass and skimp on the gin. Personal preference is for a G&T with a slash of lime.:okay:

Good tonic can make a difference too. And indeed balance is important.

That said, I often make imbalanced so it has the same effect on me!
