February Acquisitions 2026

Mine was fine.
I also acquired one of these Milk Churn brushes, and I believe it to be a genuine Simpson. I'll write more about it after it has dried following its shampoo :) In the meantime, some preliminary comments.

In my view, it marks the point of transition re Simpson family selling the business. The lathing marks are indicative, possibly still being turned on water-driven lathes at Somerset, and the rod stock looks to have the slightest rosy hue, indicating old rod stock. Notably, the loft is in Pure Badger, and the handle is smaller in dimension than the model and scale they settled on. I think it may be a prototype. A collectable, most certainly. Very cute.

I also acquired the other brush the seller had on offer. Definitely a 50 series brush in Best, or better. I think a 57. Notably, there is a glue bump above the knot, uncharacteristic of all other Simpson brushes I own. Can't be seen, but certainly felt. The 50 series pre-dates the Milk Churn by many years, and I have images of these in a 1968 catalogue, but this one was turned at the same time as the Milk Churn, c.1990. Same rod stock. Maybe the handle maker was new, as was the knot-maker. It is a very good quality brush, but possibly part of a training or experimentation run. Also collectable.

And here is the photo as promised.

Note the unmarked/unstamped 57 on the right. Looks to me like Super Badger and almost verging on 2-band. Hand-lathed, concave base.

Next: Milk Churns, for comparison.

The brush on the left is the standard, once-available MC, in Best, hybrid knot (fan/bulb). A great brush, with a nice dense loft. Dimensions:

Handle height: 53.5
Loft height: 46.5
Overall height: 99
Knot: 28
Width at base: 38
Bottom: Flat

The middle brush is the newly acquired MC. Hand lathed, with fan-shaped loft in Pure Badger. Soft, tending a little on the floppy side.
No stamp, no markings. Visibly much smaller scale, especially the handle.

Handle height: 49
Loft height: 48 (hence slight floppiness)
Overall height: 97
Knot: 21
Width at base: 33
Bottom: slightly concave

Happy to answer any questions!

Thanks for the info Shaun. Nice to have these details on the brush and it’s a shame I didn’t go for the ‘57’ instead of the Milk Churn and I’m surprised at the difference in size between the two MC.

Actually, my preference is for the MC. I think it is much nicer, and historically more important, if it is, as I think, an early version or prototype. They obviously decided to eventually go with a heftier handle as they tested and tried. The loft is better in the later model, however, some prefer a pure badger with a longer loft: great for bowl lathering. The smaller one very much has that 'hand made' feel and look not as evident in the final model.

The 57 is very nice in its own right, but probably not as significant as the MC. It does have a very beautiful loft, though, I must say. I think it is Super in 2-band, so it has soft tips with very good backbone.
