Do you plan your next shave?

Sometimes I have a vague idea of the gear I want to use before beginning the day’s shave. Rarely is it entirely preconceived. And of course there are days when I just have no inkling of the full kit until we’re all sinkside.

It’s now 48 hours since my last shave and it’ll be at least another 12 until my next one. And I’m sitting here thinking to myself, hmm it’ll be a nice beard to mow. I’m also thinking, I’ve been basically exclusive with my AC straight razors for a few weeks now and I kinda miss my injector and gem razors. And I’m also thinking, but wouldn’t a rbsr make short work of two point five days of beard? And what about the DE shavers on my shelf? Don’t they deserve a run up the ol’ flagpole? It is still October, I can break out an open comb.

What do you do? Do you choose your daily kit in advance? Maybe you’re a spur of the moment chooser? Do you have so much gear it makes your head spin, or do you have one or two reliable setups you reach for consistently? Have you ever changed your mind mid-shave? Any of these are valid points for conversation. Please don’t And I Mean DONT make the Conversation it about the Value of the Objects dollar pound euro franc yen, etc VALUE. NONE of That, do You Here?. I am talkm your GOT IT?

At the moment, I have 32 soaps, 19 razors, 19 types of razor blades, and 18 brushes made of various materials.
I rotate them daily, mixing and matching everything, with the goal of using as many different combinations as possible by the end of the year.
I pay attention to the brush-and-soap pairing—using smaller brushes for smaller containers, and vice versa—to avoid any trouble when loading the soap directly from the tub.
I use a single double-edge (DE) blade for 6 shaves, and I shave every day.
To keep track of all this, I naturally use an Excel file, which I update annually.
Please, don’t call the psychiatric ward to come and pick me up!
