Do Americans say Ta for thank you?

On another forum a banned English member has multiple identities, he suggests that he is a Texan living in Thailand but has used the word Ta (British shorthand for thanks). Has he given his nationality away or is the word Ta used in America?

Thank you

On another forum I think we have one member with multiple identities. It's probably a common practice.
Thank you, but would you expect the word Ta to be spoken by an American?

My situation is that this particular individual has been given a hard time by other members, they have ganged up to make his life pretty miserable. If this new member is the former banned member then I would reach out by way of moral support. If it us just a regular new member then I will leave him to it, it is just the use of the the word Ta in a post which soiled much more English than the American he claims to be.

Regardless of who he is, bullying, is still bullying, even if people feel he deserves it or not. To be doing it in a public space also promotes bullying, especially to people looking in without knowing the details.

Personally, I would reach out to him regardless Graham.

I would also agree with you that TA is English and not so much American. Unless he socializes/works with English people and has picked it up.

Thank you.

I have followed your advice.

It is a forum without any moderation and dominated by a handful of bullies and orchestrated through private messages, any person outside this clique, including me, can expect a hard time for anything other than the most bland of posts.

Appreciate your kind advice.

Don't know, but on a bike forum this AM someone did use Ta for thank you. As an American, I have never heard the term.

Very much leave room for this. The internet (in particular) has made international communities commonplace and language is fluid.

Although it sort of kills the plot of a old spy story I once read where the embedded agent was caught by someone who noticed he wrote a date on a form using a 7 with a line through it instead of the typical unadorned version we Americans are taught.

Thanks or Ta to all. It sounds as if he has made a mistake in using the word Ta, he was trying to be jokey or friendly without appreciating what he was saying. He is a decent enough man who has found himself on the wrong side of the puppet master who has gone all out to make his life difficult and encouraged others to do the same.

In addition to bullying and personal attacks this same forum is plagued by scammers who post links to dodgy sites. We can be grateful for even handed Moderation and a respect for one another.

Thanks again.

Much to my regret I’ve only been to the States once.
I can remember hardly anyone saying thanks, Thankyou etc.
Only ‘Have a nice day’ which was usually said without any meaning whatsoever

As a Texan and American I can assure you that except for the a lot of our Brit residents who live here in Central Texas, "ta" is no a common place term,
Thank you, this is what I thought, ta didn't sound right at all to be coming from a Texan. It is not even that common any more amongst adult Brits, often one of the first words to be spoken by a child and parked soon after.

This individual is just like so many people who are being a little bit too tricky for their own good, the saying 'what a tangled web we weave, when we practice to deceive' holds true.

Thanks for all your thoughts.
