Comedy TV

I guess we all like a laugh. I recall a
section in the Reader’s Digest with the title; Laughter is the best medicine.
I used to see heavily thumbed through copies of them on waiting room tables - particularly when visiting the doctor. I don’t recall them making me laugh out loud, but they certainly helped while away the time whilst waiting my turn in the queue. Pretty tame stuff.

These days, I try to look out for funnies on TV, but increasingly find it difficult, maybe it’s an age thing. So, I often end up resorting to the old tried and tested repeats of shows from the past. Dad’s Army, Steptoe and Son etc.

Are you currently watching anything that’s supposed to be a comedy that actually makes you laugh?

My latest attempt is Schitt’s Creek on BBC player. It has the ability to sometimes make me smile and cringe at the same time.

It's a bit of an old one, I think about 2011 on HBO, one of my all-time favourites, with Ted Danson, Zac Gifinanakis and Jason Schwartzman.

Never heard of it, but will check it out on YTube. You mention Ted Dansom - it was of its time, but I really enjoyed Cheers as well as the spin off show Fraser.

My reads of the Readers Digest were at the barbers, a wait of an hour was easily possible but to a small boy that didn't matter. He had a pile of Readers Digests and I used to enjoy the laughter sections and It pays to increase your wordpower, set out almost like a quiz.

On a bad day I could even start the Condensed Books section at the back.

I don't laugh at much on TV, perhaps the last time was a Dads Army sketch, watch Pike holding back a smile, he knew that he had created Gold.

That’s a truly memorable comedy moment.
Another slightly newer series that has made me smile is the very irreverent Father Ted, it has its moments..

I have not found a need to look for comedy shows for a least a couple of decades. There is enough comedy for me to be found in the news presented to me daily. Usually, it is enough to make me laugh and/or cringe at the same time.

There was a time, the good old days, when the TV news was boring.

The actor and German U-Boat Captain, Phillip Madoc, was born opposite my Wife; we went to the same school. He also played Magua in the UK TV series The Last of the Mohicans.

If I recall correctly, he also had an appearance in the comedy Porridge with Ronnie Barker.

That Mitchell & Webb Look is fun.

Coupling is fun if you like sitcoms. Or at least it was. Haven’t seen it in years. I couldn’t stand Friends but liked Coupling for some reason.

The wife has been watching Bistro Huddy and The Chit Show on YouTube.
