Canada Day

It’s too bad the governments of Canada sat on their hands for the 6 years since the final report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission was issued. Among other things, the Commission estimated that 3,200 indigenous children, and possibly more, had died in the residential schools and set out in “calls to action“ 71 to 76 specifics of the steps to be taken in this regard. In consequence, we should not be reckoning with this horrible legacy and wringing our hands only now.

I will remembering Canada day one cookie at a time while ruminating on recent horrific discoveries that have brought to light events after they were literally buried and forgotten.

For me it will be a somber celebration reflecting on the past and how improve going forward from this point.

This may offend some, but it seems any time and any where the Catholic Church does something there is cruelty, abuse, torture, murder, unmarked graves, and lost records. Especially where children are concerned, whether it's a school, orphanage, insane asylum, or whatever. It may well be the most violent criminal organization of all time, and for centuries they were, and to some extent still are, above the law and even protected by law. No one will have to pay for the crimes committed, even if they're still alive.

" 58. We call upon the Pope to issue an apology to survivors, their families, and communities for the Roman Catholic Church's role in the spiritual, cultural, emotional, physical, and sexual abuse of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis children in Catholic-run residential schools. "

Yeah, that'll make it all better.

No it won't make it better but an acknowledgement would go a long way toward the start of the healing process to begin.

There are other Christian religious sects that were involved in this too not just the RC church.

That's the one they've mentioned in what I've read, and they did run the other institutions that I mentioned.

Anglicans and United Church of Canada, but I believe the RC ran most of the schools. I think there were some secularly run schools too.
You could almost say that any Christian religious sects given the opportunity would have done the same. Actually it seems to me to be a pretty common failing in almost all religions, Christian or not, at one time or another.

Well said.

"People who say "You cannot judge the Catholic church by the actions of a few priests or institutions" are not only wrong in quantity - it's not "a few" by this point, there is a new set of revelations every few years, with huge numbers of people involved across continents and decades - but they are wrong in quality. They don't understand, or don't want to know, the hierarchic nature of the Catholic church and the authority of the Vatican.
(A similar argument is brought up with regard to radical or militant Islam, where, in fact, it is apt as Islam has few hierarchic authorities. There is some crossover in the sense that the first victims of radical Islam tend to be Muslims, while the first victims of abuses within the Catholic church tend to be vulnerable Catholics).
Nothing happens in the Catholic church without the Vatican knowing in advance, or learning afterwards. It is the Vatican that excuses (and relocates) the perpetrators, diminishes the crimes, blames the victims and puts future generations at risk by preventing lawful investigation.
Decades on, thousands of revelations and accusations later, all of these issues are still a problem. Why?"

They're a global mafia with endless power, and governments and laws protect them, and don't forget money and lawyers. Even judges are afraid of them. If someone sticks their neck out to accuse them or hold them accountable they will be destroyed financially and have very little chance of getting justice.

The sheer arrogance of any organisation or government that thinks that their view of the world must prevail over an indigenous peoples' is breathtaking. It's a sad legacy of colonialism and colonisation.
