Latest project from the workshop

Taking inspiration from lather catcher razors of the early 1900s, Batch 004 reimagines the GEM razor concept. This time, carved from a single piece of stainless steel. In a first for any safety razor, Batch 004 has no screws, no parts, no assembly. It’s entirely machined from one stainless billet.

If you’re new to the Workshop, this is where we experiment with new materials, finishes, and designs in limited production quantities. With Batch 004, we sought to explore how far we could push a single piece of metal into something beautiful and purposeful.

I’m surprised it’s only $230 given the length of time the machining must take and amount of waste when made from a single piece of stainless steel.

CNC Machines make the actual work go fast one you have everything dialed in.

Looks like Blackland did a lot of R & D with a 3D printing.

If you have ever seen a CNC at work it is eye opening expierence.

Block of metal becomes a part very fast.

But a CNC is a pricy investment.

There’s still more material to remove than is left so machining from solid is still time consuming (whether it’s CNC or manual) and to programme CNC is expensive when that time / cost is amortised over just 120 pieces.

However, that’s what these experiential batches are all about and good luck to Shane for pushing these concepts into production.

Not 100% sure he's talking about batch 004? Sounds like planning for the next design 005.

I asked about a satin version and was turned down.
