ATTROC-Above The Tie Razor Owners Club

Come on men: there are more of us than the young pretenders to the throne. Show us all your ATT combinations Slants/ OC's/ SB's/handles etc.
I'm a bit busy at the mo but I'll post mine very soon, just need the ball to start rolling.

In HA terms, I'll be a hang-around or prospective for a little while longer, as I currently have no ATT goods in my possession. Making its way to me, however, are S1, S2 and R2 plates with the two top caps, along with an Atlas and a Kronos handle. Very much looking forward to receiving the package!

I'm a member. I own the M1, R2, S1 and S2. I don't own any original handles though. I bought all except the S2 base plate from BST posts. I got the S2 plate direct from Stan as a return. TBH I could happily never use the M plates as they are too mild for me, same goes for the S1.

I will post up some pictures when back home but I currently own the following ATT products:
Kronos handle
Atlas handle
Bamboo handle
M1 head
R2 head
H1 head
S1 head (on the way)
S2 head
SE head

I used to rave about the R2 and H1 heads till I received my Timeless OC. It may also be season related, as in winter the R2 is great but in the summer I find it too harsh.

My personal view on this is that even much less expensive razors do a very good job.
I own four ATT plates and if you asked me "do you think the high end ATT razors offer a shave that no other less expensive razor can deliver?" I'd say probably not. I only own two more razors ( I'm not a collector ) but that is enough for me to say "probably not" because I can also get an equally excellent shave with either of the other two. The difference I find and why I'm still happy I paid the money these things cost, is in the built quality of the razors. They feel lovely in the hand, the weight distribution, the look, etc. So from that point of view, yes they are fantastic.

As for shave quality.... there are so many factors that it's very difficult to attribute a razor the title of a champion. Too subjective topic for me to say this is the best razor. Some days I shave with what I think it's the best razor ever and the following day it's not the same expeience at all.

I also have to say that I'm perhaps different to most of the guys here. I don't want to collect razors that I will hardly use. I also want to use the ones I like and use them a lot.

Would I like to own a timeless razor? They look great, I'm sure the quality is fantastic too but unless a win the lottery I would not bother

I often compare collecting razors to collecting watches. Cheap or expensive they will tell you the time, however when looking at the watch it is either a piece of art or a relatively disposable product. You have to IMO love the look of a razor to firstly fork out a large sum of money, if it then performs beyond expectation, then it becomes a 'champion' razor. Obviously YMMV. Other improvements beyond aesthetics would be how the blade is held tighter and the tighter tolerances so its the user's technique that is critiqued, as opposed to the equipment.

So what do those of us with both do? Lurk in the shadows and then side with whomever wins?

I completely agree. While all the stainless razors I've tried have shaved very well indeed, probably due to the attention to detail in the design and manufacture, what you're really buying into isn't a superior shave it's the material and workmanship. You need to look at it as buying for the pleasure of owning a really nice thing not for improving your shave.
