Why witch hazel?

I do not use Thayers etc due to sourcing and the cost. The issue I have with the run of the mill stuff is the smell. It is not nice although it does not hang around. Have experimented with adding essential oils but the nasty smell is always there somewhere. Aloe vera is a good alternative imho.

Witch hazel is an astringent, as is alum. But I find that witch hazel also soothes in a different way than the alum. After using alum, my face feels nice and tight as I rinse it off. But with witch hazel, I leave it on and let it dry and I think it helps to moisturize my face somewhat. I use both alum, followed by witch hazel in my aftershave routine. Maybe it's overkill but both are so cheap per use and I like the results.
